WALTER NORD GRANT
PROGRAM
GOALS AND CRITERIA
The Walter Nord Grants are awarded for proposals which describe
new courses, new curricular approaches, or new teaching methods.
Five awards of $10,000 each are made for a time period of one
year. Proposals should focus on one or more of the following:
-
Interdisciplinary approaches and bringing
new avenues of thought to bear on complex human problems;
-
Global orientation which considers transnational
implications of human actions;
-
Enriching the national reputation of Northern
Ohio by producing graduates with special expertise or knowledge.
Proposals which involve use of technology and the Web are still
encouraged, but this is not a requirement. The following criteria
will serve as the basis for making awards:
-
Extent to which proposals meet at least
one of the three goals described above;
-
Innovation and creativity;
-
Extent to which proposals focus on enhancing
student engagement in learning;
-
Specificity of project descriptions which
indicates careful planning;
-
Extent to which proposals address special
challenges in higher education such as student diversity,
impact of technology on pedagogy, and personal and intellectual
growth of students.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
The deadline for the 2003-2004 academic year
is Monday, June 30, 2003.
Proposals and supporting documentation should
be in TRIPLICATE.
Proposals should be no more than five
pages in length (including budget) and should begin with a
100-word summary of the project. The proposal should
consist primarily of a description of the project including
background, rationale, and a specific project description.
Pay special attention to how the proposal fits at least one
of the three goals listed above. Avoid jargon and write proposals
for a general audience.
Proposals should have a detailed budget which
is co-signed by the Department or School Chairperson or Dean.
Budgets can contain faculty summer salary, student help, software,
limited travel, and supplies. Fringe benefits must be included,
but there is no overhead. Equipment and computer purchases
are discouraged unless strongly motivated by the proposal.
Each proposal should be accompanied by a CV
for the principal investigator. The CV
should not exceed five pages. Supporting material
documenting prior contributions to teaching, curricula, and
education is appropriate but should be included as part of
the CV and included within the five page limit.
