Faculty members of all colleges and schools at CWRU are invited to apply to become Learning Fellows during the Spring 2014 semester. This will be the fifteenth in the series that began in Spring 2003. About 220 faculty have participated so far. The Fellowships are for CWRU faculty who want to meet with faculty from across the university and explore ideas on how people learn and how those ideas can be applied in the classroom to improve teaching. The response of previous participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with many saying that the discussions about learning with faculty from across the university were enjoyable and tremendously valuable to them in their work.
The structure of the program is similar to that of a semester-long, seminar-type course in which faculty discuss the research literature on learning, and how that knowledge can be translated into practical strategies to enhance student learning. Class meetings will consist of, among other things, the following features: discussions of learning theory; creating more interactive large and small classes; aligning course goals, teaching methods and assessments; cooperative learning; improving assessment methods; creating better classroom rapport with and among students; enhancing student motivation; developing general teaching and class management skills; dealing with ethical issues; and gender and ethnicity implications of teaching strategies.
In the Spring 2014 semester, meetings will occur once a week on Wednesdays from 12:30-2:00pm, beginning on January 15 and ending on April 23. Lunch will be provided at each session. There will be no session on March 12 due to spring break.
Enrollment in the program implies a commitment by the faculty member to attend and participate in ALL the weekly sessions, submit weekly journals, and complete program evaluations and other assignments as may be required. The out of class readings and assignments take about 4-6 hours per week. Upon successfully completing the program as indicated, a grant of $2,500 will be created for each faculty member to be used at their discretion for academic purposes during the fiscal year July 1, 2014-June 30, 2015.
Faculty members of all colleges and schools at CWRU (whether tenure track or non-tenure track) are invited to apply to become Fellows but preference in selection will be given to those who have an expectation of a reasonably long-term, multi-year relationship with the university.
The application should consist of a very brief (one page) bio-sketch containing education and employment history and the courses taught in the last few years with their approximate enrollment, and a cover letter indicating why you are interested in participating in the Fellowship. Applications should be in electronic form (as a PDF document) and sent to ucite@case.edu to be received at the UCITE office by Friday, October 11, 2013. If an acknowledgment of the application is not received within one week of submission, please contact the UCITE office to make sure the application was received.
Inquiries should be addressed to ucite@case.edu.
