June 2001 Newsletter

Communications Report:

Communications committee has been redesigning the format and gathering the information to be put in the SAC Insert. Cost quotes are currently being obtained. The committee volunteered to assist the Staff Recognition Committee in promoting and preparing for the Party on the Quad, which will be held July 27 at 4 p.m. An information sheet that describes SAC and its various committees has been submitted to Human Resources for review and inclusion in the orientation packets for new employees. Communications Committee will meet Tuesday, June 12, at 12 noon in 351 Adelbert Hall.

Community Services Report:

The Community Service Committee will be holding a fund-raising basket auction in conjunction with this year's Benefits Fair in November. CWRU departments will be invited to donate a "theme" basket for the auction. This Fall we will be promoting participation in the Breast Cancer Run/Walk. Details on these events to follow in subsequent newsletters/announcements. The Committee is seeking a new Chair or Co-Chairs. Interested individuals should contact Terri Geiger (tam x2660) or Christy Kehoe (cxk15, x5517). Service Committee will meet Thursday, June 21, at 12 noon in Charlie's Place at Thwing Center.

Elections Report:

We would like to congratulate Kathryn Howard, she has been elected as the Vice Chair for the Council for the upcoming year. Nominations for general elections in Academic Administration, Applied Social Sciences, Dentistry, Nursing and University Administration have been mailed out and are due back on July 15. Ballots will be mailed on July 19. Please contact Theresa Emerson if you have a question or wish to nominate a candidate from those areas. The candidates can be met at the upcoming staff party on the quad with details to follow on a flyer to be distributed next month. Elections Committee will meet Tuesday, June 12, at 3:00 p.m. in 604 Crawford Hall.

Fringe Benefits Report:

The Committee is discussing Plan B retirement, health insurance for retirees, adoption leave, and availability of birth control pills. Fringe Benefits Committee will meet Monday, June 18, at 4:00 p.m. in 352 Adelbert Hall.

Staff Policy Report:

The committee is discussing the issue of second-hand smoke on campus. The Staff Policy Committee will meet Wednesday, June 20, at 10:30 a.m. in 353 Adelbert Hall.

Staff Recognition Report:

The President's Award for Distinguished Service will be awarded to three deserving staff members at the Staff Service Awards Luncheon June 13. Congratulations to Jean Gubbins (Public Affairs), Linda Hansen (Registrar's Office), and Carolyn Solis (Weatherhead School of Management)! The committee is working with Human Resources and the Communications Committee to plan the Party on the Quad scheduled for July 27. The theme will be centered on CWRU-175 years. Staff Recognication Committeewill meet Tuesday, June 19 at 12 noon in 720 Crawford Hall.

Staff Training and Development Report:

The Committee is hosting a staff development seminar entitled, "Building wealth is easier than you think" presented by Cleveland Saves on Wednesday, June 20 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Clapp Hall auditorium. Interested individuals may become a "Cleveland Saver" and receive a free one-on-one planning consultation with a wealth-building coach or financial planner. In order to raise awareness, the Employee Resources (purchased by HR and house in the Kelvin Smith Library) will be displayed at the Benefits Fair in November. Staff Training and Development will meet Wednesday, April 14, at 12 noon in 1 Adelbert Hall.
