Annual Report 2000-01

Accomplishments

This election year was the first under the new constitution, the change allowed the committee to revise the election calendar allocating more time be given for each step of the election process. The committee was pleased with the additional time, however it did not prove to increase the participation, as was the initial goal. See statistics and list of all new representatives. We also initiated a change in the constitution. This initiative eliminates the need for the committee to organize a ballot and voting, in the Councils officer Elections. The change in the constitution was passed, and is in article 2; section 5, which now reads, "In the event that there is only one nominee running for any of the officer positions at the time nominations are closed, that person shall be declared elected by acclamation at the next scheduled general Council meeting." In addition, a breakfast replaced the previous luncheon for the 2001 fall orientation. It was very well attended, and will be the event of choice again next year. Another first for the committee this year was an event for the candidates to meet and greet the staff at the beginning of the voting process. It took place during the Staff Party in the Quad. The name of the event was Candidates and Crayons. The nominees collected donations of crayons, coloring book and various other art supplies, which the committee then gave to the Ronald MacDonald House. This proved to be a successful community service event.

Future Goals

Without the election, there would be no representatives or a Council. Our biggest goal, as always, is to increase participation in the Staff Advisory Council. A full list of nominees to serve as representatives in all management areas is therefore essential. The creation of a nominating committee will be used this year in conjunction to the traditional nomination process. The event for meeting candidates held before election will be expanded (i.e. visibility, better location).
