Nobel Laureates
 Case Western Reserve counts 14 Nobel laureates among its alumni and current and former faculty, including the first American scientist ever to receive the Prize. The Case-affiliated laureates are listed below in reverse chronological order.
Edward C. Prescott, Economic Science, 2004. Earned the MS degree in Operations Research in 1964.
Paul C. Lauterbur, Physiology/Medicine, 2003. Earned the BS degree in Chemistry in 1951.
Ferid Murad, Physiology/Medicine, 1998. Earned the MD and PhD degrees in 1965.
Frederick Reines, Physics, 1995. Former Professor and Chairman of the Department of Physics.
Alfred G. Gilman, Physiology/Medicine, 1994. Earned the MD and PhD degrees in 1969.
George A. Olah, Chemistry, 1994. Former Professor and Chairman of the Department of Chemistry.
George H. Hitchings, Physiology/Medicine, 1988. Former Professor of Biochemistry.
Paul Berg, Chemistry, 1980. Earned the PhD degree in 1952.
Earl W. Sutherland, Jr., Physiology/Medicine, 1971. Former Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology.
Donald A. Glaser, Physics, 1960. Earned the BS degree in Physics in 1946.
Polycarp Kusch, Physics, 1955. Earned the BS degree in Physics in 1931.
Frederick C. Robbins, Physiology/Medicine, 1954. Former Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics, Dean Emeritus of Medicine, and University Professor Emeritus.
John J. R. Macleod, Physiology/Medicine, 1923. Former Professor of Physiology.
Albert M. Michelson, Physics, 1907 (the first American scientist to win the Prize). Former Professor of Physics.
National Academy Memberships
Election to the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, or the Institute of Medicine is among the highest honors that academic faculty can receive. A number of faculty at Case have been elected to membership in the national academies in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in their discipline. Among active and emeriti faculty, eight are members of the National Academy of Engineering, four are members of the National Academy of Sciences, and seven are members of the Institute of Medicine.
In addition, the current Case faculty includes two members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, eight members of the American Law Institute, one member of the American Philosophical Society, and 16 fellows of the American Academy of Nursing.
Other Faculty Honors and Awards
A number of Case faculty have also received significant recognition for their research and scholarship. The current full-time faculty includes two recipients of the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award, one of the highest honors given a scientist. Since 1995, Case faculty have received two Burroughs-Wellcome Fund Awards, three Cottrell Scholar awards, three Guggenheim Fellowships, two Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator awards, two Humboldt Fellowships, 17 National Science Foundation CAREER Awards, one Pew Scholar in Biomedicine award, two Robert Wood Johnson Policy Fellowships, two Searle Scholars Award, and three Sloan Research Fellowship.
