University community narrows 21 sketches down to four concepts

Case Western Reserve University asked students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends what they would like to see in a new logo through online and campus forums and then collected feedback on 21 rough sketches through an online survey and campus logo fair.

About 4,000 members of the university community—including 400 people who attended the logo fair—responded to the survey of concepts being considered as part of the university’s new visual identity design process.

About 52 percent of those who participated in the survey were alumni, 26 percent were students and 17 percent were faculty and staff. About 5 percent identified themselves as other or did not answer.

In addition to the survey results, more than 2,000 individual comments were received.

The four concepts found most popular were: original sketch E, O, Q and U. These designs will be further refined and presented to the university community for additional input.

The final four concepts represent images that members of the university community found appealing and indicated were representative of the university's history, traditions and future potential. These concepts also are designed to address the recommendations of the university’s Branding Task Group, including providing equal representation to Case and Western Reserve and building on the current university logo.
