Your Level Determination

 

Level Beginner I/II Intermediate Advanced
Definition Little or no previous experience Some experience Extensive and fairly current experience
Would Probably Fit if You: Never done any type of dance, took tap only under age 9, tapped for less than one year, have had less than 3 semesters of Tappers experience Can easily execute all beginner steps listed, have had 2+ years of current and consistent tap, had many years of lessons but haven’t done it for over 5 years, have taken 3+ semesters of Tappers lessons Can easily execute all beginner and intermediate steps listed at high speeds and levels of complexity; have had 10+ years of current tap lessons
Objectives • Be able to execute the basic steps listed with correct technique
• Be able to incorporate steps into basic combinations
• Develop senses of straight and some syncopated methods of counting and rhythm
• Increase coordination, strength, flexibility
• Develop ability to learn and perform choreography
Additionally, Beginner II will:
• Increase speed and fluidity of basic steps
• Develop ability to incorporate steps into more complicated combinations
• Be able to execute intermediate steps listed with correct technique
• Master beginner-level step execution; increase speed and combination complexity
• Build rhythmical complexity
• Increase coordination, strength, flexibility
• Increase speed of choreography learning
• Enhance performance ability, stage presence
• Be able to execute most advanced steps listed
• Master beginner and intermediate level steps with high speed and combination complexity
• Be able incorporate all straightforward advanced steps into choreography
• Be able to maintain consistent rhythm during multiple rhythms or a cappella
• Increase coordination, strength, flexibility
• Increase ability to quickly learn new choreography and combinations
• Master performance technique/stage presence
Content of Practices • Half time spent doing exercises: explaining new steps & practicing in isolation, doing short combinations
• 2nd half spent doing a routine; first couple of weeks, the routine will not be progressive, but then we will start to build onto it
• Similar to beginner, half time spent on exercises of new step isolation & combos w/ new/ old steps, building speed, etc
• Other half spent learning routine
• Majority of time spent learning choreography. Will start immediately with performance routine.
• 10-15 minute break from choreography taken to do drills with advanced steps.
Steps to be covered Step, Stomp, Stamp, Jump, Leap, Hop, Toe dig, Heel dig, Heel drop, Toe drop, Brush, Shuffle, Flap, Scuff, Shasse, Pivot, 3 ct turn, Riff, Slap, Scissors, 1x timestep, Chugs Buffalo, Heel clicks, Toe clicks, 3-sound riff, Cramp roll, Flat flap, 2x timestep, 3x timestep, Bells, Jump-log, Trenches, Double pullback, Dble wing, 1x pirouette, High kicks, Coffee Grinders, Riffle/scuffle, Toe stands Single pullback, Pullback change, Single wings, 1-ft wing change, 1-ft wing toes, 2x pirouettes, Toe stand turns, 1-ft PB change, Scissor wings, Pendulum wings, 5-sound wing, Floor slides, Jazz leaps
