Free Tap Lessons

The Spartan Tappers offer absolutely free tap dancing lessons to Case students every Tuesday night during the school year. Lessons are held in Studio 3 at The Mather Dance Center.

For Spring 2008, the theme is "Classic Rock," and lesson information is as follows:

Level Time Teacher Performance Song
Beginners 7-8pm Caitlin Hittie Aerosmith - "Ragdoll"
Intermediate 6-7pm Lauren Walter AC/DC - "Back in Black"
Advanced 8-9pm Meredith Stone Chicago - "25 or 6 to 4"

The Level Determination page can help determine the correct level to attend. Members between levels are welcome to attend more than one level.

Usage contract: Before attending lessons, we require each Tapper to sign a Mather Dance Usage Contract. The dance department requests that we follow these rules.

Rehearsal attire: Comfortable work-out clothes are suggested. Jeans are not recommended for any level. Tap Shoe information is available for new and returning members who need taps. Changing facilities are available on-site.

Timeliness and Attendance: Please make every effort to attend every rehearsal and to be on time. Routines are started right away, and every week builds upon the last. Latecomers can be a disturbance to the rest of the group, but we prefer someone come late rather than not at all! Attendance is taken each week by the secretary, so be sure to sign the attendance form when you enter rehearsal.

Community Members: Due to student participation being supported by the student activity fee, community members (HS graduate and older) are required to pay $50/semester to attend lessons and any other Tappers functions. A two-week trial period is permitted, with a cost of $5/lesson, applicable to the $50 fee if attendance continues.

Performances: Tappers are highly encouraged, but not required, to perform. Be sure to let your teacher know if you do not plan on performing. Lessons are often structured around learning a performance routine for at least 1/2 of the time, though the routine also is choreographed to build skill level.

Schedule: Tappers rehearse nearly every Tuesday night. We usually finish a few weeks before the semester ends, due to performances being done and heavy workloads. We also do not rehearse on University holidays and breaks. See the Official Schedule for a detailed calendar.

Lesson help / Private lessons: Any Tapper struggling with material should first download the steps and music from the Routine Steps and Music page. If this does not suffice, teachers are sometimes able to make themselves available for a private "catch-up session" for committed Tappers who have missed rehearsal due to reasons outside their control. Some semesters, beginners special help sessions are offered by an advanced "helper" near performance time.

Teachers: Teachers for the Spartan Tappers are Case students who have been tap dancing for several years. They are advanced-level Tappers who would like to extend their involvement in the Tappers. Though they do not generally have certification or degrees in dance instruction, they have often taught or helped out at private studios. Having student instructors (who teach for free) saves the Tappers several hundred dollars a semester, allows us to offer lessons for free, and we have found that it does not really decrease the level of instruction. Advanced-level students who join the Tappers and show dedication may be given the option to teach or help out by the current officers and teachers after one semester with the group.
