I've never tapped before. Can I still come?
Yes!
In Fall 2004, we started offering weekly tap dance lessons at 3 levels. Tappers of any level can come; see our rehearsal times on the welcome page and calendar. We suggest that brand new tappers should begin in the fall semester.
I'm not Case-affiliated. Can I take lessons?
Yes!
Adult (HS graduate or older) community members can attend Spartan Tappers lessons for a small fee of $50 per semester. This includes one-hour lessons every Tuesday night of the semester (excluding the first and last weeks, and Case fall or spring breaks-- you will be guaranteed over 10 weeks of lessons) and the option of performing. You can also try "trial lessons" for the first two weeks at a cost of $5 each. This is considerably less than the cost of lessons at a studio, and we think it is fair given the amount of the student activity fee.
I've tapped for awhile, but I don't recognize the step names on your description. What do I do?!
Talk with one of the officers, and they can help you decide. Also, you are welcome to come to two different levels for a few weeks until you decide which one is right for you.
What kind of performances do the Spartan Tappers do?
During each semester, we plan on performing 2-4 times. In the fall, that usually includes the Case Showoff campus talent show, a film society co-sponsorship preshow, a performance for Concordia Care Elderly Day Center, and maybe one other performance. In the spring, we also perform at Concordia, as well as for ExtravaDance, the Spartan Tappers sponsored all-Case dance show, and 1-2 other performances. All members are encouraged to perform, but it is not required.
What are some of the benefits of being in the Spartan Tappers?
Tapping is fun, of course! Besides that, it is good for you. Tapping, especially once you reach intermediate/advanced levels, can be quite a workout. Tap dancing also develops coordination, a sense of rhythm, and some flexibility. Plus, you can make great friends coming to the Spartan Tappers.
What should I wear to practice?
Wear anything you want that is comfortable and easy to move around in. It can get quite warm when we practice, so we recommend wearing a tee-shirt or tank top (not a hoodie or long sleeves). Jeans are not recommended. You don't have to wear dance tights or a leotard or anything like that; in fact, none of us usually do. Oh, and of course - wear your tap shoes!
I'm a guy. Am I allowed in?
Of course you are! Any Case student, regardless of gender or anything else, can come learn to tap dance.
I have no sense of rhythm and two left feet. Am I still allowed in?
As long as you can keep a good sense of humor, try hard, and come to the beginner level class, you'll be in good company with everyone else. Nobody should be embarrassed about how well he or she can dance!
I don't have shoes. Do you have any suggestions?
You can check out your options and guidelines on our
Shoes
page.
