- Jen Choy: Announcement of new committee members
- Some of the committees aren’t as “vigilant” as they should be.
- Committee members attached.
- Student issues for inquiry by committees:
- Flag is dusty: assigned to building and grounds
- 3rd floor printer broken: assigned to library committee
- Some confusion among members about which printer/copy machine isn’t functioning, there seem to be multiple ones.
- Ms. Levy mentions that the bathroom on the first floor women’s bathroom has defective faucets: the water is extremely hot. Would like Building and Grounds to look into it.
- Each committee should have something to report intermittently throughout the semester. Email Ms. Holmes to be put on agenda.
- Student Life
- Mr. Arnold explains that things got messed up in setting up bar review last week
- JALSA is having a party at Panini’s this week
- Next week Bar Review at the Colony: $1 off drafts
- Mr. Schmitt requests that directions to Bar Review bars be provided.
- Mr. McLaughlin suggests that the address be put on the flyer and it can be mapquested.
- Subcommittee Reports
- Old Business
- Vote on Weatherheadless Ball allocation:
- Mr. McLaughlin explains the breakdown of the funds: asking for $1000 from the law school and med schools. If business school doesn’t spend all the money they will give refunds.
- Weatherhead made a list of everything they are putting the money towards.
Security $650
DJ $600 + 50 for travel
Beer $750 to $1,000
Soft Drinks/Ice/Cups $300
Decorations $500 to $1,000 (this is subject to change based on how elaborate we get)
Promotional &Misc. $500 to $800
- Confusion on whether we donated money last year.
- Ms. Levy points out that all this was already discussed, and we shouldn’t bring it up again. Our relationship was less than reputable last year because of the issue of funding.
- Motion to give Weatherheadless Ball $1000.
- passed.
- Mr. Davidson asks what Weatherheadless is all about and wants to inform the 1Ls.
- Mr. Mortenson puts him to task. Get an email to Patty Kim about it.
- Ms. Levy says that they traditionally give us flyers to post.
- Mr. Kringle suggests that 1L reps present it to their sections.
- Mr. McLauglin passes on that business school is looking for volunteers to help decorate. Email Sam Harpold at sch16@case.edu if interested.
- Have to bring a non-perishable item to be admitted.
- Mr. Tsai says there’ll be a pre-party for people volunteering.
- New Business
- Budget Requests
- Appeal by “Festivus for the Rest Of Us”, organized by SILS. Chris Kuhn and
- Holiday party at the Mad Greek. Good deal. $900 for an open bar from 7-11:30PM. APALSA, SALSA, BALSA will co-sponsor. Going to be a pot luck. More grown-up than a bar review.
- SILS coming for additional requests bc there is so much interest. The location has been upgraded.
- BALSA is going to contribute $200.
- Mr. Arnold points out that they’re rich.
- Restaurant is cool with bringing in food from the outside.
- It’s a festival, so they want to make it a humanitarian effort and donate to a charity also.
- $1600 is a conservative
- BALSA is going to contribute what SBA can’t. Consider it one of their events; they’re cancelling another event.
- It’s conservative because the expected bar spending is less that what will be consumed.
- It’s actually not conservative, but an accurate estimate.
- Mr. Levy asks what the point is, other than just serve food and alcohol.
- Mr. Kuhn: the idea is to set up a humanitarian fund, but the specifics have not yet been determined.
- Mr. Arnold motions to give $0
- Mr. Arnold suggests that they throw a kickin party for less money, or get it from BALSA.
- Mr. McLaughlin asserts that if they are setting up a scholarship fund or make donations it’s ok. We have given money to events such as “soul food and jazz” in the past. Some costs are extravagant, like $20 for blank CDs though.
- Mr. Herrick amends motion to give $500.
- Mr. Davolos discusses the various costs specifically, the total is unreasonable.
- Mr. Tsai points out that 4 great orgs are getting together. It’s not just for alcohol. Although there’s food and open bar, there’re sodas too. Suggests the full amount be given.
- Mr. Arnold amends standing amended motion to only give $100 total.
- Mr. Malbasa moves to table the motion.
- Mr. Zink moves to call to question Mr. Arnold’s motion.
- Doesn’t pass.
- On the floor is still the $500 motion from Mr. Herrick
- Mr. McLaughlin wants to know what the food reimbursement is for. Students are making the food, should be paid back.
- Mr. Kringle asks how much SBA still has. Mr. McLaughlin answers about $10,000.
- Motion to amend, increase the allocation to $500.
- passed.
- Motion to call to question $500 allocation.
- Motion to give the $500.
- passed. 3 nays.
- Commencement Committee: presentation on school paraphernalia designs
- Colleen O’Donnell, chair: as a major fundraiser 3Ls have a clothing sale, “spirit wear”. She is asking what students would be interested in purchasing. There were some articles left over from last year that were sold this year. Interested in knowing what logo/what articles students want this year.
- Ms. Levy says that many people have siblings, children, young people in their lives that would sell well. “kids stuff”
- Mr. Kringle asks for an email address to give suggestions: cmo8
- Ms. Choy wants to information on the logo design.
- Committee has found a printer that will do smaller quantities.
- All the Case logos are going with the “fat guy with a surfboard” design. We can do anything that’s different.
- If there’s a design competition, it may take too long to make it practical and the stuff won’t be ready.
- Mr. Mortenson points out that there can be rolling production, so they can start with a few designs now and select more later.
- Mr. Choy would like to know what deadlines are.
- The deadlines are flexible
- There could be a competition for future designs.
- Mr. Mortenson would like to get bids from various printers.
- Mr. McLaughlin suggests winter hats. It’s Cleveland.
- Mr. Ryan points out that Mr. McLaughlin is from the UP, where certain hats are in style.
- Mr. Chiang asks about “pet-wear”.
- There has to be enough interest, but is a good idea.
- Ms. Levy suggests baseball caps.
- Mr. Tsai suggests shot glasses.
- Apparently they sold terribly last year.
- Mr. Schmitt suggests blankets.
- Mr. Zink says we can buy smaller quantities and they’ll be sold.
- Mr. Samtoy suggests lapel pins, but thinks Mr. Arnold’s idea: “STUD” “ENT” sweatshirt is good.
- When printing out clothes, the lower the price per unit for larger orders.
- Mr. Cary suggests that because a lot of parents are in town, we should negotiate hotel prices in the area for commencement.
- Ms. O’Donnell doesn’t know if that’s been done in the past.
- Mr. Mortenson requests that the SBA commencement committee work with Colleen and Brian.
- Mr. Mortenson asks Ms. O’Donnell to provide the proposals to vote on.
- Ms. Levy points out that there has never been a vote in the past bc it’s primarily been a 3L thing. It shouldn’t be up to our approval.
- Mr. Mortenson thinks that who the printer is used is important bc we’re funding the project.
- Mr. Herrick says that students should participate.
- Ms. O’Donnell thanks SBA for having her.
- Everyone claps.
- Mr. Mortenson would like students to send in designs.
- Ms. Levy answers that a 1L and 2L should sit on the commencement committee.
- James Tsai and Tyler Davidson volunteer.
- Mr. Arnold says that only one person participated in the design competition (himself). There may not be much interest.
- Mr. McLaughlin suggests we give a $50 prize.
- Or $50 coupon redeemable on paraphernalia.
- Mr. Kringle suggests that the CIA be offered chance to design the shirts.
- By-Law Amendment:
- Introducing the amendment 7 days before a vote can happen.
- Synopsis: SBA can’t have a meeting on a religious holiday.
- See attached.
- Mr. Arnold moves to amend the agenda: “where are the business cards?”
- Wonders where the business cards are the Mr. Mortenson promised during his campaign. Could be useful for the committees.
- Mr. Mortenson spoke with CSO and others about it. It’s easy enough to go to printing services and have them done. It takes so long to get everything done at the administrative level that it would be fastest if you just did it yourself.
- Mr. McLaughlin suggests that student life committee get a generic “student life” card to pass out when making bar review arrangements.
- Announcements
- Mr. Kringle announces the Dean’s meeting will be on the Friday before fall break. There’ll be Valentino’s pizza. Issue is “creating an academic plan”.
- Dean wants people to take classes that are on the bar. It’s important for 1Ls because statistically there is no correlation between classes and bar passage rate.
