Annual Meeting

The major event of the year is the Annual Meeting, which is held each spring in March or April. The meeting is held in a different place each year and those attending frequently have the opportunity to tour special exhibits or historical medical sites in the area, or to see special research resources in medical history.

Meeting Program

In 2014, libraries around the world celebrated the 500th anniversary of the birth of Andreas Vesalius, best known for his Seven books on the fabric of the human body (commonly known as the Fabrica after its Latin title).  It was a landmark publication in the history of medicine with its numerous illustrations and detailed description of the structures and functions of the human body.
The Ohio Academy will celebrate the history of anatomical illustration at the 2015 Annual Meeting to be held on Saturday, April 25th at the Lloyd Library in Cincinnati.
The morning session has been set aside for presentations by Ohio Academy members.  We encourage members to present papers on any aspect of the history of anatomical illustration and related sciences, even if still a work-in-progress.  You may have a 20 minute OR a 30 minute time slot.  Please consider sharing your work.
As in the past few years, we are encouraging students in the history of medicine to attend the meeting and present papers.  Please distribute the attached forms to students you feel may be interested.  As incentive, students giving papers will receive free meeting registration and lunch!

The afternoon session will feature a Keynote address by Marie Dauenheimer, Board Certified Medical Illustrator, on the history of medical illustration techniques and pinpoint the premier medical illustration collections in both Europe and the US.  Following the Keynote, Stephen Joffe, professor of surgery and medicine, will offer a presentation on Vesalius and his great work on anatomy and where the 1st and 2nd editions of that work are in the US.  Finally, Anna Heran, exhibits curator, and Lloyd Library volunteer Marcia Hartsock, will introduce attendees to the medical illustration collection at the Lloyd established through the Vesalius Trust organization and the Association of Medical Illustrators.

We hope you will join us for this exciting meeting and consider presenting your research on some aspect of medical illustration, art and medicine or, certainly, some other topic in the history of medicine.

To present a paper, download form and return it by February 15th.
