Annual Meeting

The major event of the year is the Annual Meeting, which is held each spring in March or April. The meeting is held in a different place each year and those attending frequently have the opportunity to tour special exhibits or historical medical sites in the area, or to see special research resources in medical history.

April 16th, 2016

How many times have we sat perched on the edge of an examination table in a doctor's office, or prone in the chair at the dentist's office and wondered how we got to where we are today in medicine? No really! Do you ever wonder why we are perched on that Formica table, why the sphygmomanometer is attached to the wall? Or why the dentist places that glowing wand up against the filling to "cure" it? Well, this year the officers of the Ohio Academy of Medical History have decided to pose those questions in hopes that those interested in medical history will answer them..

The theme we have chosen "Innovations in Medicine" will complement Every Necessary Care & Attention: George Washington & Medicine, a traveling exhibit from the National Library of Medicine and hosted by the Medical Heritage Center. This is a wonderful exhibit that explores medicine as it was during the lifetime of George Washington and his immediate family. The purging, the bleeding, the tonics… all is chronicled through documents and family accounts. This promises to produce one of those "My, how far we've come" moments.

We encourage members and guests to present papers with a focus on innovations that brought medicine to where it is today, even if the paper is still a work-in-progress. You may have a 20 minute OR a 30 minute time slot. Please consider sharing your work.

As in the past few years, we are encouraging students in the history of medicine to attend the meeting and present papers. This is a great opportunity for graduate students to present their thesis topics and get feedback from peers and fellow historians. Please distribute the attached forms to students you feel may be interested. As incentive, students giving papers will receive free meeting registration and lunch!

We hope you will join us for this exciting meeting and consider presenting your research on innovations in medicine.

To present a paper, download form below and return it by March 1st.
