Prayer Requests

Pope John Paul II and Prayer

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Greetings Newman,
As the celebrations of Pope John Paul II’s 25-year pontificate came to a close, the Pope drew and is still drawing strength from the power or prayer.  For more details, read below, but first:
·         Mass will resume this weekend, and we will be praying the 3rd Luminous Mystery of the Rosary which is the Proclamation of the Kingdom of Heaven and the Call to Conversion.  Please join us a few minutes before 6pm at Hallinan and join us in prayer.
·         Just a reminder, All Saints Day is Saturday, November 1st.  Mass will be held at our local parishes and you are encouraged to attend.
·         Fr. Joselito, the joyful Filipino priest at Holy Rosary, will be leaving the Cleveland Diocese next month.  His last Masses at Holy Rosary will be said this weekend.
·         Another reminder, don’t forget to set those clocks back this weekend.  Daylight savings time ends at 2am on Sunday, giving us 25 hours in one day.
·         Our Professor Prayer Cards will reach the letter F this weekend.  Thanks again to all who have been praying, keep up the good work.
·         Diocon, the Diocese Conference for Catholic students is coming up on November 15th and 16th.  If you’re interested or want more information, please email Kirsten (kkolaja@dioceseofcleveland.org).
·         A chastity group is in the works on campus called Live in Love and they are looking for prospective members and leaders.  Please contact Chris Kolibaba (csk10@cwru.edu) if you are interested or to get more information.
·         And, as always:
Patristic Quote of the Week
Origen: “The Church received from the Apostles the tradition of giving Baptism even to infants.  For the Apostles, to whom were committed the secrets of divine mysteries, knew that there is in everyone the innate stains of sin, which must be washed away through water and the spirit.”  (Commentaries on Romans 5, 9 [post A.D. 244]).
John Paul II Credits His Strength to Prayer of Church
(From Zenit.org)
VATICAN CITY, OCT. 22, 2003 - Exhausted but pleased after a week of 25th-anniversary celebrations, John Paul II said his strength to carry out his duties comes from the prayer of the whole Church.
The Holy Father made that point today in his homily at a concelebrated Mass with the 30 new cardinals. The cardinals received their rings, sign of their unity with the Pope.
The first reading of the liturgy, taken from the Acts of the Apostles (12:1-11), recounted the imprisonment of the apostle Peter in Jerusalem, when "earnest prayer for him was made to God by the Church." The text goes on to narrate the miraculous liberation of the first Pope.
"What great courage is infused by the support of the unanimous prayer of the Christian people! I myself have been able to experience its comfort," John Paul II said in the homily read by Archbishop Leonardo Sandri, substitute for general affairs of the Vatican Secretariat of State.
"This, dear brothers, is our strength," the Pope said. During the Mass his difficulties in pronunciation revealed his exhaustion after a week of celebrations that included the beatification of Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
"And it is also one of the reasons why I desired that the 25th year of my pontificate be dedicated to the holy rosary: to stress the primacy of prayer, in a special way of contemplative prayer, made in spiritual union with Mary, Mother of the Church," he continued.
"The presence of Mary -- desired, invoked and welcomed -- helps us to live this celebration also as a moment in which the Church is renewed in the encounter with Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit," the Pope explained.
John Paul II ended his exhortation: "Yes, Lord, we trust in you and with you we continue on our way in the service of the Church and of humanity."
So, keep praying and have a wonderful weekend!  Thanks for reading.
In Him,
“He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.’  I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me.”
