Greetings Newman,

This week’s newsletter includes an appearance by St. Vincent de Paul, a priest from France and patron of all charitable societies; but before that, we have lots of events coming up:

·         St. Paschal Baylon in Highland Heights will be hosting an Apologetics Forum this coming Monday, August 29th from 7:15pm to 9pm.  This is a great opportunity to learn more about being Catholic and the most effective ways to talk about it with others.  Please email Jonathan (mjonathanryan@juno.com) if you are interested or want more information.

·         This is the last call for anyone who wants to attend Tridentine Mass this Sunday, September 29th at Immaculate Conception in Cleveland.  Please meet at Hallinan at 11am and feel free to talk to Jonathan or Brian (bds14@cwru.edu) for more details.

·         LIFT has started, but if you still want to sign up please e-mail Kirsten (kkolaja@dioceseofcleveland.org) to sign up for the 7:00pm meetings on Mondays or Phil (ptk3@cwru.edu) for the 7:45 meetings on Tuesdays.

·         Dinner will again be served this week after Mass at Hallinan this Sunday, so come join us for food and fellowship.

·         Newman and UPCaM (United Protestant Campus Ministries) are sponsoring a Young Women’s Spirituality Day Retreat at the Manor House at Squire Valleevue Farm on October 4th from 8:30am to 2:30pm.  This will be a good time for reflection, discussion, fun, and fellowship.  Let Kirsten know if you are interested in attending.  There is no fee for attending.

·         The next meal for the poor at St. Coleman’s will be on October 11th.  E-mail Phil (ptk3@cwru.edu) for more information.

·         If you are interested in tutoring middle-school aged boys in the Chance for Change program at St. Agnes, Our Lady of Fatima, please let Kirsten know.  This is a great opportunity to serve and mentor those in need of a little extra attention.

·         Women and men in their 20s and 30s are invited to attend this year’s Ohio Young Adult Conference on Saturday, October 18th at John Carroll University.  This all-day gathering of more than 400 young adults includes a keynote address by Jesse Manibusan and 15 workshop choices on topics important to young adults.  Check out http://www.ohioyoungadultministry.com for more details.

·         And, as always:

    • Sunday Mass, 6pm, Hallinan Center
    • Daily Mass, 12:15pm, Weekdays at Holy Rosary
    • Confession, 4-5pm, Saturdays at Holy Rosary
    • Nightly Rosary, 9:45pm Mondays on Northside, 9:30pm all other days on Southside
    • Spend some time with the Blessed Sacrament, 8am-5pm (ish) M-F, Hallinan.
    • Check out our website at http://home.cwru.edu/ncsa
    • Submit a Prayer Request at http://home.cwru.edu/ncsa/request.html
    • E-mail us at catholic@cwru.edu

Patristic Quote of the Week

Arnobius of Sicca: “Are you able to point out to us or to show us among all those magicians who ever existed through the ages, anyone who did anything similar, even in the thousandth part, to what Christ did?”  (Against the Pagans 1, 43 [A.D. 327]).

Prayer Requests

Please pray for

·         Peace in the world and in our own hearts

·         Marriages, especially those having difficulty, for the strengthening of those relationships and their daily renewal in love and commitment

·         That we may be a light to the world and salt for the earth

·         The safety of all military personnel

·         The unity of all Christians

·         All priests and religious, in thanksgiving and that the Lord would bless them in all that they do

·         And for the lonely, sick, abused, and forgotten, that God’s grace and peace would be with them.

St. Vincent de Paul

(1580?-1660)

Vincent was the leader of what is now known as the Congregation of the Mission, or the Vincentians. These priests, with vows of poverty, chastity, obedience and stability, were to devote themselves entirely to the people in smaller towns and villages.

Vincent established confraternities of charity for the spiritual and physical relief of the poor and sick of each parish. From these, with the help of St. Louise de Marillac, came the Daughters of Charity, "whose convent is the sickroom, whose chapel is the parish church, whose cloister is the streets of the city." He organized the rich women of Paris to collect funds for his missionary projects, founded several hospitals, collected relief funds for the victims of war and ransomed over 1,200 galley slaves from North Africa. He was zealous in conducting retreats for clergy at a time when there was great laxity, abuse and ignorance among them. He was a pioneer in clerical training and was instrumental in establishing seminaries.

Most remarkably, Vincent was by temperament a very irascible person—even his friends admitted it. He said that except for the grace of God he would have been "hard and repulsive, rough and cross." But he became a tender and affectionate man, very sensitive to the needs of others.

Pope Leo XIII made him the patron of all charitable societies. Outstanding among these, of course, is the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, founded in 1833 by his admirer Blessed Frederic Ozanam.

Hope this first Thursday of autumn finds you doing well.  Thanks for reading.  Have a wonderful weekend!

In Him,
