CaMar (previously known as MASA) at Case was reestablished in fall of 2000 with only 13 members who were all Malaysians studying at Case. Previously, there were more than a hundred members in the association but the association was dormant for several years due to the decreasing number of members who graduated and lack of incoming freshmen because of the economic slump in South-East Asia in the late 1990’s. Currently, there are 64 active members in the association, thanks to the booming economy and increase in Malaysian government sponsorships.
With the re-establishment of CaMaRian 2000, the Malaysian students at Case had an organization to represent them in the campus community and to represent Malaysia in campus events. This organization, in addition to help foster kinship among Malaysian students, is also a way to foster relationships with other students on campus from its participation in intramural sports and events organized by the International Students Office. MASA, with a majority of its members being Malay Muslims, is also affiliated with the Muslim Student Association and have collaborated in organizing programs to help explain Islam and presenting the religion in a positive light, especially after the tragedy of September 11th.
This organization also serves as liaison between Malaysian students at Case and the Malaysian embassy in Washington to ensure the welfare of the students. CaMaR has helped welcome visits by officers of Petronas, MARA and the Malaysian Students Department and have kept these sponsors up-to-date with the students’ academics and financial concerns. |
