STAFF SELECTIONS
Associate Editor Selection
At the end of their first year of law school, students are invited to participate in a summer writing competition. The Journal of International Law selects its Associate Editors for the upcoming school year from the pool of students who complete the writing competition. The competition is held in conjunction with Health Matrix and the Law Review and all submissions are read anonymously. JIL will extend offers to join the Journal—as an Associate Editor—to students who demonstrate strong writing, reasoning, and citation skills.
Responsibilities of Associate Editors
Associate Editors have two main responsibilities. First, Associate Editors participate in a seminar class taught by the Journal of International Law’s faculty advisor. Through this class, JIL Associate Editors write an in-depth scholarly paper on a topic of their choice. Completion of the Note satisfies the law school’s writing requirement. In addition, Associate Editors may submit their Note to the Executive Board for consideration for publication the following year.
Second, Associate Editors participate in JIL’s production process. Associate Editors are charged with verifying the accuracy and format of legal citations contained in pieces selected for publication. In addition to improving research skills, the verification process exposes associates to cutting-edge analysis and arguments from renowned experts in various fields.
Executive Board Selection and Responsibilities
Upon successful completion of their Note and their production duties, Associate Editors may run for Executive Board positions. The outgoing Executive Board selects all members of the new Executive Board based on the quality of their Note, their performance of publication duties, and an interview.
The Executive Board is responsible for selecting Associate Editors, training Associate Editors, running symposia, selecting articles and Notes for publication, editing articles, corresponding with authors, maintaining the website, and facilitating a smooth transition to the new Executive Board.
