1998 Lake
Erie Model UN Conference Results
CWRU Rocks Kent for 4th Straight Year
By JOHN D. GIORGIS
For the 4th straight year CWRU Model UN was a force
at Kent-Ashtabula's Lake Erie Conference. This year,
CWRU racked up 40 points, one better than last year's
39, and the best showing by CWRU ever under the 50-point
system which was introduced last year.
Unfortunately, 40 points was not enough to take home
their third straight Championship, as Ohio University
pulled in a whopping 42 points. OU brought home a set
of 10 awards, including a Conference-leading two superiors.
CWRU did bring home a total of 12 awards, but under
Conference rules, which only allow scoring of a certian
10 delegates, OU had more two team points than CWRU.
The judges this year were extremely stingy, with only
seven superiors awarded across all seven committees.
CWRU's scoring was led by their only Superior Award,
taken home by head delegate and club President Jeneanne
Shanahan. Shanahan turned in an inspirational performance
as Morocco on the Arab League, playing on a broken ankle
she had injured only Monday. Jeneanne also did what
is normally the "kiss of death" in modelun, by arguing
with her Chair for nearly an hour over interreting the
rules. The gamble, paid off, however, and she was additionally
rewarded by the Committee's gavel for her efforts. Said
Shanahan after the Conference " I was really surprised.
With everything that happened this week, breaking my
ankle and all, I didn't have a whole lot of time to
prepare. In fact, I still don't even know where Morocco
is on a map!"
In other events, CWRU received a strong boost from
their delegate to the Committe on the Peaceful Uses
of Outer Space. All four delegates were attending their
first college Conference, and all four one excellents.
This incredible rookie showing was comprised of Bryan
Inderhees as Japan, Aaron Teiser as Brazil, John Clark
as the Russian Federation, and Brigitte Belmonte as
Pakistan. Two other rookies with also had significant
amounts of high school experience also brought home
excellents for CWRU. Jason Liao brought home CWRU's
only award from the 1914 summit representing Serbia,
and Trevor Jenkins also won an excellent on the NATO
Committee. Trevor's solid perfomance on NATO was accompanied
by excellent awards from veterans John D. Giorgis and
Mark Brighton as Turkey and Greece. Veterans rounded
out a solid day of scoring for CWRU with excellent awards
from Andrew Zupcsan as Egypt on SOCHUM, Johan Ericsson
as USA on Security Council II, and James Chang as USA
on Security Council III.
Finally, solid "god" performances were returned by
Rachelle Celebreeze as Japan on Security Council I,
Romy Lee as Morocco on SCOHUM, Ryan Yeh as USA on NATO,
Mindy Miller as Germany on the 1914 Summit, Jim Moratti
as Austria-Hungry on the 1914 Summit, and by Adam Vainder
as Tunisia on the Arab League. Vainder, who was at his
first Conference, said "I was really happy to turn a
nation like Tunisia into a real power on the Arab League.
Said veteran member John Giorgis,on the weekend's
effort "I was particularly impressed by how well all
of our new members managed to uphold CWRU's tradition
of strong, professional performances at this Conference.
Second Place is nothing to be ashamed of, and I am very
excited that this team will still be able to expect
big things here well into the future."
The Third Place Award was taken by Aquinas College
of Michigan with 35 points. A tie occurred for fourth
place between KSUAC and Youngstown State each with 31
points. The small school award was taken by John Carroll
University.
This is the last Conference of the semester for the
CWRU team who now returns home to prepare for their
very own Cleveland National Conference. Next semester,
they have a packed schedule with representatives scheduled
to attend McGill, Dayton, and U Chicago, as well as
the granddaddy of them all: Harvard. In other news,
it was announced this weekend that CWRU has been assigned
Kazakhstan for Harvard this year.
Said Giorgis, "I think this Conference gives us a
lot to build on for the coming year. I think this team
has shown that it has the talent to make big things
happen at all of our Conferences next semester. I really
hope we can go out there and really make some noise.
I am very excited."
