Collegiate Athletic Association Student-Athlete Advisory
Committee is to enhance the total student-athlete
experience by promoting opportunity, protecting
student-athlete well-being and fostering positive
student-athlete image.”
Article I. Purpose
The
purpose of the Case Association of Student-Athletes
(CASA) is to enhance the experience of student-athletes
who are members of intercollegiate athletic programs at
Case Western Reserve University.
Section 1. Mission Statement
The mission of the Case
Association of Student-Athletes (CASA) is to
provide student-athletes with a means of improving
visibility within the campus community through community
service, communication between student-athletes and the
administration, and increased community involvement.
CASA will also provide insight and feedback on
Department of Athletics issues, and NCAA matters and
legislation.
Section
2. Function of CASA
a.
Promote communication between athletic staff,
coaches and student-athletes.
b.
Provide insight into Department of Athletics and
University Athletic Association (UAA) matters, and
provide a platform for feedback on these subjects and
legislation.
c.
Provide community service opportunities and
programs for varsity teams and the Department of
Athletics.
d.
Encourage teams to support one another by
promoting and attending events.
e.
Promote a positive image of student-athletes on
and off campus.
f.
Contribute to the organization of the All-Sports
banquet.
Section
3. Goals
a.
Create more visibility on campus for
student-athletes.
b.
Provide a forum for student-athletes to
communicate with the Department of Athletics, coaches,
and academic administration.
c.
Build a sense of community encompassing all
athletic programs.
d.
Provide a means of communicating to the
student-athlete population, the academic community and
our surrounding neighborhoods.
e.
Build relationships with the Greater Cleveland
community.
f.
Work in conjunction with the Case Reserve
Athletic Club on events, programs and Department of
Athletics initiatives.
Section
4. Non-Discrimination
CASA will
not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed,
sex, sexual orientation, national origin, disability,
age, or status as a veteran.
Article II. Membership
Section 1.
Representation
a.
CASA will consist of at least two (2)
representatives from each varsity sport (indoor and
outdoor track are considered one sport).
i.
All student-athletes are eligible to represent
their respective team. It is encouraged to have both an
upper class and lower class team member as
representatives.
ii.
The term of membership will be one academic year.
Members are permitted to serve more than one
consecutive term.
iii.
Each individual team can determine their
representatives and shall transmit them to the Director
of Athletics by September 15th of each year.
iv.
A team can send more than two representatives to
meetings, but only two representatives will have voting
power.
b.
Student-athlete representatives must maintain
academic and athletic eligibility during membership on
CASA.
c.
Duties of Representatives:
i.
Communicate with their respective teams the
topics discussed during CASA meetings.
ii.
Attend every CASA meeting barring an excused
absence due to academic or athletic responsibility or
extenuating circumstances. The absence should be
communicated to the President of CASA at least 48 hours
prior to the meeting. If two consecutive meetings are
missed without an excused absence, the member must
commit to attend the next meeting, or the team will have
to elect a new representative.
iii.
Actively carry out the mission statement and
purposes of CASA.
iv.
Participate in at least one service project,
organized through CASA, each semester.
Section
2. Officers
a.
CASA shall elect a President, Vice President,
Secretary, Treasurer, and Committee Chairs to be known
collectively as the Executive Board. The Executive
Board members are considered a representative for their
team as well. Hence, the Executive Board will consist
of:

CASA Spirit, Committee Chair
i.
Duties of President:
1.
Preside over council and executive board
meetings.
2.
Serve as a liaison to the Department of
Athletics.
3.
Function as spokesperson for the student-athletes
to the Department of Athletics, university, community,
and media.
4.
Communicate regularly with the administration and
determine the agenda for the CASA meetings.
ii.
Duties of Vice President:
1.
Preside over CASA meetings in the absence of the
President.
2.
Assist the President with his/her duties.
3.
Oversee the committee chairs and holds them
accountable for effective discharge of duties.
iii.
Duties of Secretary:
1.
Record minutes at each council and executive
board meeting and distribute minutes to all members and
the Department of Athletics.
2.
Understand all CASA policies and educate others
about them.
3.
Record attendance.
iv.
Duties of Treasurer:
1.
Monitor CASA budget.
2.
Works with university to obtain funding for CASA.
3.
Oversees fund-raising.
v.
Committee Chairs: Committee Chairs are
responsible for recruiting at least three volunteers for
committees. CASA members will be assigned to committees
if volunteers are not secured.
1.
CASA Service
a.
Organize and advertise service projects in the
community.
b.
Moderate member participation in the service
projects.
2. CASA
Programs
a.
Plan and organize social events that promote
unity for student-athletes, teams and the Department of
Athletics.
b.
Work with the Department of Athletics to plan the
annual All-Sports Banquet.
3.
CASA Spirit
a.
Advertise and attend events of the Department of
Athletics.
b.
Develop programs and incentives to encourage
attendance of athletes and non-athletes at athletic
events.
vi.
CASA Faculty Advisor
1.
CASA will have one department advisor appointed
by the Director of Athletics and one faculty advisor
chosen by the Executive Board. Advisors shall serve one
year renewable appointments.
2.
Assist the Executive Board with their duties.
3.
Act as a liaison between the Department of
Athletics and CASA.
Section
3. Elections
a.
During the March general assembly meeting,
student-athletes can be nominated, by others or by
themselves, to run for an Executive Board position. In
order to be eligible for an executive office, you must
have been a member of CASA for at least one semester.
b.
Elections will be held during the April meeting.
i.
During this meeting, candidate discussion and
voting will take place.
ii.
Each candidate will be allotted up to five
minutes.
iii.
A confidential representative vote will be by
ballot.
iv.
Votes will be tallied by the President, Vice
President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Results will be
emailed to all of the CASA members.
v.
Newly elected officers are expected to join
current officers at the final two executive board
meetings of the year.
c.
Ties are decided by the Executive Board.
Section
4. Removal
a.
Any CASA member can be removed from their
position by a two-thirds vote of the representatives.
Should removal take place, the nomination and election
process will take place immediately. Reasons for removal
include:
i.
Failure to complete assigned duties and overall
lack of participation in CASA.
ii.
Failure to meet qualifications for membership of
CASA.
Article III. Meetings
a.
There will be one general assembly meeting the
first Monday of each month. In the event that the first
Monday of the month is a university holiday, the meeting
will be held the first Monday school is in session.
Every
representative is expected to attend meetings. Absence
of members have been addressed in Article 2, Section 1,
under representation.
b.
Committees will meet as the Chair deems
necessary, but at least once every 2 months. The
bi-monthly committee meetings must be scheduled with the
knowledge of the Executive Board.
c.
The Executive Board will meet at least once per
month in addition to the general assembly meeting.
Article IV. Amendments and
Revisions
Section
1. Amendments
a.
The constitution may be amended at any time by a
two-thirds vote from the CASA membership body and
approval of the CASA Department Advisor. Prior to
voting, the new amendment must be discussed at a general
assembly meeting.
b.
Any member may introduce an amendment to be
considered.
c.
The amendment must be voted on during the meeting
immediately following the one in which it was
introduced.
Section
2. Revisions
a.
This document must be reviewed annually by the
CASA Executive Board.
