Pledge Program

The pledge program is meant to be a meaningful and fulfilling experience. It is something to look back upon and be proud. During the pledging process, you will develop a special bond with your pledge brothers, a bond that will last a lifetime. Through pledge education, you will learn the rich history of Beta Theta Pi and the values and principles that turn great men into Betas. This program is unique in that leadership core values are taught as part of the regular curriculum. Each of you will have the opportunity to demonstrate and develop your skills as leaders. The pledging process is a special and exciting time and is designed to assist and allow you to reach your full potential in all of your current and future endeavors.
What does it mean to be a pledge?
A pledge is selected because this chapter of Beta Theta Pi sees the possibility of him becoming a worthy member, a man who by his future achievements would add to the radiance of our badge and to the excellence of the name of Beta Theta Pi.
The Pledge inherits over a century and a half of traditions, history, ideals, and accomplishments. His pledge button labels him at once as a prospective Beta. He is stamped with a name which has been enriched by the lives and deeds of more than 170,000 men who have worn the badge and borne the name before him.
The preparation for membership is a process of education. As in all education, the individual being educated must take the primary responsibility. No one can educate him without his cooperation.
The preparation for membership described is not to be accomplished through hazing. It is forbidden in Beta's Code. Campus and community officials are increasing their vigilance against possible hazing infractions. Most states have made hazing either a misdemeanor or felony.
The pledge, as a selected man, is expected to earn the right to become a member of Beta Theta Pi. An indifferent and unmotivated pledge becomes an indifferent and unmotivated member. The pledge, therefore, should bear the burden of becoming his brother's keeper cheerfully. He should study diligently the Fraternity's lore and history contained in many sources and should strive to the best of his ability to maintain the high standards of intellectual achievement and achievement in college life that have been the hallmark of Beta Theta Pi since its inception. In the doing of these, the pledge will progress from the honor of becoming a Son of the Stars to the highest honor of joining the Sons of the Dragon.
