Case Western Reserve UniversityCase Western Reserve University’s adventures are three-day small-group experiences open to incoming first-year students that offer a unique opportunity to bond with a small group of fellow students, upperclassmen, faculty and staff.

Adventures are based on certain themes, like sustainability, the arts, outdoor adventure or community service, and they help students learn about Cleveland, find their way around town, and get to know more about themselves and their classmates.

Adventures are fee-based and cost $250. The fee includes food, accommodations, activities, supplies and transportation to and from campus.

Registration will be available beginning June 1 via the New Student Checklist.

Students are invited to choose one adventure program from the following list.

Creates!

If you are into learning about the arts and entertainment scene in the greater Cleveland area, this interactive adventure is for you. University Circle, the home of Case Western Reserve, is touted as the hub of arts and culture due to its concentration of museums, culture and rich history. So, jump right in and discover local museums, get hands-on with arts workshops, and network with new students, upper-class mentors and staff!

  • Visit world-renowned museums right in CWRU’s backyard
  • Create and experience during hands-on workshops
  • See the sights, stars and stages of Cleveland as you experience PlayhouseSquare, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, The Christmas Story house and more

Explores!

Explores will be a true adventure in your new city! Find out about all Cleveland has to offer, and get to know some of your classmates in the process. This is your opportunity to take a couple days to orient yourself to the area before getting wrapped up in your classes for the semester. Your friends will quickly recognize you as an expert on having fun in Cleveland after orientation.

  • Learn about the area's history
  • Visit historic and vibrant landmarks and learn about cool things to do
  • Learn how the city is changing and the transformation occurring in our own University Circle area
  • Become a super-savvy user of the RTA, the local public transportation system

Leads!

Leads is designed to kick start your college journey by introducing you to other first year students and upper-class mentors who want you to be an involved and successful member of the CWRU community. This Adventure is co-sponsored by Case Western Reserve’s Office of Student Activities and Leadership.

  • Small-group activities, such as a high ropes course and team initiatives, will allow you to have fun while making meaningful connections to other Leads participants.
  • Learn about yourself, your talents and how you can capitalize on your strengths in your academics and involvement through completing the nationally used Clifton Strengths Finder.
  • Gain practical skills and get connected to resources on how to manage your time, balance academics and involvement and transition from high school to collegiate involvement
  • Get a sneak peek of the CWRU Leadership Journey, and let our upper-class leaders help you explore the 200 student organizations you can participate in

Serves!

Join in a trip co-sponsored by Case Western Reserve’s Center for Civic Engagement and Learning. Learn about the city of Cleveland while giving back to the community through a variety of service opportunities.

Participants will get the chance to take part in both large- and small-group service projects, learn about campus organizations and local service-learning projects to work with during the school year and discover the city at night through fun social activities.

Sports!

Sports are a $650 billion global industry. In Northeast Ohio, sports are life: Greater Clevelanders live and die with their sports teams. In this adventure, we’ll go outside the lines to appreciate the community-building power of sport, as well as the sophisticated nature of building competitive and entertaining teams.

Participants will gain an appreciation for the rich and storied history of sports in Cleveland, as well as the wait-till-next-year attitudes of often-tortured Cleveland fans. Sponsored by Case Western Reserve University’s Office of Undergraduate Admission.

  • Attend Cleveland Indians (baseball), Lake County Captains (single-A Indians affiliate) and Cleveland Browns (football, preseason) games
  • Enjoy visits and facility tours to Indians, Cavaliers and Browns headquarters
  • Visit with representatives from Cleveland Gladiators (arena football), Lake Erie Monsters (hockey) and Cleveland Fusion (women’s football) teams

Do roller coasters and wave pools get your blood pumping? Looking to learn about the best places to let off some steam during the school year?

Visit some of our area’s most sought after attractions with a group of your classmates, and have plenty of time to make some new friends along the way. Scope out the best amusement park, waterpark and entertainment in the area!

  • Ride the roller coasters at Cedar Point, Northern Ohio’s nationally renowned amusement park
  • Cool off at Wildwater Kingdom, a huge water park with everything from extreme water slides to a lazy river
  • Explore the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo while getting to know your fellow adventurers

Treks!

Take a trip to beautiful Ohiopyle State Park in Fayette County, Penn.—19,000 acres of rugged natural beauty that serves as the gateway to the Laurel Mountains. The focal point of the area is the Youghiogheny River Gorge (pronounced yaw-ki-gay-nee), which cuts through the heart of the park for nearly 14 miles. The Yough provides some of the best whitewater rafting in the eastern United States.

  • Hike and swim while exploring the park and getting to know your fellow Treks Adventurers
  • Camp under the stars in platform tents, and gather around the campfire to cook your own meals.
  • Experience the power of the Yough firsthand with a day of whitewater rafting.

Ventures!

Entrepreneurship Cleveland-style! Join the Career Center, the Blackstone LaunchPad and the Weatherhead School of Management to explore the Cleveland business scene. Innovation and design, high-powered collaborative incubators for small business development, multiple levels of entrepreneurship and networking will all be aspects of this experience. Participants will gain the beginnings of a toolkit for career success with insights into this unique and thriving community.

  • Explore the world of startups, accelerators and top mid-sized organizations
  • Enjoy venues offering insights into the world of business in Cleveland, such as Quicken Loans Arena, “The Q”
  • Network with CWRU alumni and hear first-hand about the successes they’ve created following graduation
  • Each day will wrap up with a fun social event at a popular Cleveland hot spot as participants unwind from stimulating days filled with possibility
  • Participating partners include ONOSYS, Bizdom, Quicken Loans, Quicken Loans Arena, Mitchell’s, Great Lakes Brewing Company, Something Different Gallery, Horizontal Books, Johnnyville Slugger and Fresh Brewed Tees.
  • Social event locations include The Corner Alley and Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians.

Engineers Design!

Calling all students interested in engineering, design and sustainability. Join the Case School of Engineering to redesign one of the busiest and largest cafeteria recycling programs on campus while having fun exploring Cleveland.

  • Hone your problem-solving skills while working alongside your peers in small groups led by upper-class engineering students to improve the Biomedical Research Building's recycling program
  • Innovate and prototype in the think[box] lab, and learn about the hands-on resources think[box] has to offer
  • Pitch your ideas to campus and engineering partners and compete to win a prize for the best redesign idea
  • Network with engineering student leaders to learn all about what life is like for engineering students at CWRU
  • Enjoy food and music at the Cleveland Air Show

Learn how Cleveland is transitioning to become a “green city on a blue lake.” Tour Northeast Ohio’s first urban Ecovillage—a quasar waste-to-energy bioreactor—and other state-of-the art sustainability efforts in Cleveland and on campus. This adventure is co-sponsored by Case Western Reserve’s Office for Sustainability.

  • Tour local state-of-art, high-performance green buildings, renewable energy installations and other sustainability sites
  • Connect with business owners that have embedded sustainability into their business model
  • Learn how you can help transform Cleveland into a green city on a blue lake
  • Engage with the community and business leaders that are putting Cleveland and sustainability on the map
