Three different organizations—including U.S. News & World Report—have designated Case Western Reserve University as a premier educational choice among national colleges and universities.
Case ranks number 24 in the inaugural edition of The Washington Monthly College Guide, which designates the top national universities based on three main criteria: universities as engines of social mobility, producing academic minds and scientific research that advance knowledge and drive economic growth, and encouragement of a service ethic. According to the publication "while other guides ask what colleges can do for students, we ask what colleges are doing for the country." The rankings appear in the September issue of the guide.
In the 2006 edition of the America's Best Colleges guide from U.S. News & World Report, Case's undergraduate program ranking is number 23 in the nation in the "best values" category and 37th overall. The publication ranked 248 national universities in various undergraduate categories. Other highlights include:
- Case's undergraduate engineering programs overall rank 36th, and its biomedical engineering program is ranked as the sixth best in the country
- The university's undergraduate management program ranks 30th, and its operations management and quantitative analysis programs rank 19th and 14th respectively
Case is also featured in the 2006 edition of The Princeton Review's The Best 361 Colleges. According to the publishers, only about 15 percent of the four-year colleges in America and two Canadian colleges are in the book, which profiles the best institutions for undergraduate education. The author of Case's section writes that although the university is well-known for its engineering and science programs ".Case has worked hard to broaden its offerings in recent years." The Princeton Review surveyed 110,000 students who rated their schools on several topics, including academics, student life, and admissions.
