Case Western Reserve University’s aggressive technology transfer
program has landed it among the top 10 nationally for many key indicators
in the field among institutions with comparable levels of research funding.
According to the latest survey of universities with $250 million or
less in research funding, Case ranks:
- Number five nationally in terms of university-based start-up companies
- Number six in income derived from technologies developed at the
university and licensed to outside companies
- Number seven in terms of invention disclosures
- Number eight in licensing income as a percentage of research funding
- Number 10 in overall levels of research funding.
The survey was carried
out by the Association of University Technology
Managers (AUTM) and covers the period July 1, 2002-June 30-2003, the
latest period for which data is available. Case received $224 million
in outside research funding for the period.
“We are extremely proud of these results,” said Mark Coticchia,
vice president for research and technology management at Case. “They
demonstrate beyond any doubt that Case is truly a leader in technology
transfer. The numbers are also a tribute to the hard work of everyone
at Case associated with the technology transfer program.”
In April Coticchia was invited to Monash University in Melbourne, Australia
to talk to university and government officials and business leaders
about Case’s success in building its technology transfer process.
Among all universities during the period, Case ranked number 13 in
terms of start-ups, number 24 in licensing income as a percentage of
research funding, number 23 in licensing income, number 38 in invention
disclosures, and number 55 in total research funding.
Coticchia said the university has continued its growth in most of the
categories measured by AUTM. “I think the coming years will see
us continue to solidify and even increase our leadership as our success
builds upon itself.”
