The Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (MOCA) today announced that it has received a $2.1 million grant from the George Gund Foundation to help fund a capital campaign to build a new museum as part of Case Western Reserve University's planned University Arts & Retail District development. With the Gund grant, MOCA has raised $5 million to date in early lead gifts toward its capital campaign, which will be formally announced at a later date. MOCA will be the signature structure in Case's mixed-use development located at the "Triangle" site at the southeast corner of Euclid Avenue and Mayfield Road in University Circle.
"We are grateful for the George Gund Foundation's generosity, which gives us a great start on our capital campaign, and for its long history of support to MOCA," said Harriet Warm, president, MOCA board of directors. "And as part of Case's planned development, we're now closer than ever to realizing our goal of relocating to University Circle."
In addition to the MOCA facility, Case's plans for the Triangle site include retail and residential development. "MOCA has earned an international reputation for its work in bringing the best in contemporary art to Cleveland. We think the museum will be a noteworthy factor in our students' campus experience and serve as an important anchor to this dynamic "college town" development," said Case president Edward Hundert.
MOCA intends to launch an international competition for an architect to design an iconic building for the site. "An architecturally significant building will be our gift to Cleveland," said Jill Snyder, MOCA executive director. "With a new facility, MOCA will be able to do additional collaborative programs with other arts, cultural and educational institutions."
