Case Western Reserve University's technology transfer program has continued its impressive growth, according to the latest statistics from the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM).
The AUTM survey, which covers the period July 1, 2003-June 30, 2004 ranks Case 20th in the U.S. in licensing revenue, the first time the university has placed in that top tier. The university generated $11 million in licensing revenue for the period.
In addition, Case outperformed the national averages for several other key indicators of growth, including licensing revenue as a percentage of research expenditures, and the number of invention disclosures and start-up companies generated per dollar of research activity. The university had 135 invention disclosures for the year, while research expenditures were approximately $262.4 million.
"These figures demonstrate both the ongoing strength of our program and the fact that we have created a nationally ranked organization that can compete with institutions anywhere in the country," said Mark Coticchia, vice president for research and technology management at Case.
Nick Frollini, assistant vice president for technology transfer, noted that Case accounted for approximately 19% of all the invention disclosures statewide, and 50% of the licensing revenue earned by Ohio-based research institutions during that same period.
Recent company start-ups based on technologies developed at Case include Arteriocyte, Inc., Cleveland Nanocrystals, Inc., Interventional Imaging, Inc., and Synapse Biomedical, Inc. The university expects to announce several new start-ups early in 2006.
