Public health advocate Sidney Wolfe to deliver 2005 Schroeder lecture at Case School of Law

Adverse drug reactions kill approximately 100,000 Americans each year, making it the nation’s fourth leading cause of death. Sidney Wolfe, director of Public Citizen’s Health Research Group, will discuss the problem when he delivers the annual Oliver C. Schroeder lecture at the Case Western Reserve University School of Law.

Wolfe is the 2005 Oliver C. Schroeder, Jr. Scholar-in-Residence at the law school. His lecture, “Worst Pills, Best Pills” will take place Wednesday, November 16 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in room A59 of the law school, 11075 East Blvd. on the Case campus. It is sponsored by the school’s Law-Medicine Center and will be broadcast live on the Internet. Viewing information is available at http://www.law.case.edu/lectures. The lecture is free and open to the public and one hour of CLE credit is available at no charge.

“We are delighted to host Sidney Wolfe for this important lecture,” said Gerald Korngold, dean and McCurdy Professor of Law. “Dr. Wolfe has been one of the nation’s most outspoken advocates on behalf of consumers in the area of pharmaceutical policy. His career serves as a wonderful inspiration for our students.”

Wolfe, a 1965 graduate of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, is the author of Worst Pills, Best Pills: A Consumer's Guide to Preventing Drug-Induced Death or Illness. He has directed Public Citizen’s Health Research Group since its founding in 1971 and was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 1990. In 1966 he began working at the National Institutes of Health where he did research on aspects of blood-clotting and on alcoholism. He has been an advisor to Ralph Nader on health issues and helped to recruit medical student volunteers to work for Nader. Since 1995 he has been an adjunct professor of internal medicine at the Case medical school. He is a member of the Society for General Internal Medicine.

The Oliver C. Schroeder, Jr. Scholar-in-Residence was established in 1986 to recognize Professor Schroeder’s 38 years of service to the Case School of Law as professor and acting dean. Schroeder co-founded the Law-Medicine Center in 1953 and served as its director until his retirement in 1986.
