Professor David Little to deliver inaugural Distinguished Lecture in Global Security Law and Policy at Case Western Reserve University School of Law

"Religion and Terrorism: A Human Rights Approach" will be the topic of the first annual Distinguished Lecture in Global Security Law and Policy at the Case Western Reserve University School of Law. The talk will take place Wednesday, November 2, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in room A59 of the law school, 11075 East Blvd.

David Little, the T.J. Dermot Dunphy Professor of the Practice in Religion, Ethnicity and International Conflict at Harvard Divinity School, will be the speaker. Little will discuss the role of religion as a rationale and motivation for terrorism and the guidelines provided by the post-World War II human rights system for combating state and non-state terrorism and for containing religion's connection to violence.

The law school's Institute for Global Security Law and Policy is sponsoring the lecture. It is free and open to the public, with one hour of CLE credit available at no charge. The lecture will be webcast live at http://www.law.case.edu/lectures/.

"We are delighted to welcome Professor Little," said Gerald Korngold, dean and McCurdy Professor of Law. "His expertise in the fields of religion, terrorism and ethics will provide our students with valuable insights regarding the nature of conflict in today's world and is especially appropriate for inaugurating the Distinguished Lecture in Global Security Law and Policy."

Little has been on the faculty of Harvard Divinity School since 1999. He also serves as a faculty associate on the school's Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. Before that he was senior scholar in religion, ethics and human rights at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C. From 1996-1998 Little was on the State Department Advisory Committee on Religious Freedom Abroad. He holds a B.A. from the College of Wooster, a B.D. from the Union Theological Seminary and a Th.D. from Harvard.

Founded in 2005, the Institute for Global Security Law and Policy addresses these issues through an interdisciplinary approach that blends theory with practical applications. The Institute serves as a resource for governments, businesses, organizations, the legal profession, and educates students on these issues so that they can better serve clients and society and become leaders in the search for solutions to problems of national security and terrorism. Its director is Israel Defense Forces Lt. Col. (ret.) Amos Guiora, professor of law, and its assistant director is B. Jessie Hill, assistant professor of law.
