Gender, Race, and the Presidential Election” workshop September 22

Do stereotypes such as the “Sex and the City” generation who only care about shopping, or assuming that a specific racial group will vote with one political affiliation have an impact on whether those potential voters show up at the polls on Election Day?

Case Western Reserve University students, faculty and staff, and community members are invited to explore these issues and more at the “Gender, Race and the Presidential Election” workshop on Wednesday, September 22 from 6-8 p.m. at the Spartan Room. The workshop is part of Case’s Center for Women Multiculturalism Series, and is facilitated by the Anti-Defamation League.

The university is hosting the Race at Case - the 2004 vice presidential debate - on October 5. Voter registration and turnout is a hot topic during this election, and it’s also a top priority of the workshop organizers. Consider the fact that 22 million single women who were eligible to vote did not cast ballots in the 2000 presidential elections, according to the Women’s Voices Women Vote nonpartisan group. Dorothy Miller, director of Case’s Center for Women, said one desired outcome of the workshop is for people to walk away “with a sense of empowerment about voting.”

Rebecca Youngerman, associate director of the Anti-Defamation League’s Ohio/Kentucky/Allegheny Region, stressed that the workshop “is not designed to endorse a particular candidate.” Instead, workshop goals include hearing different perspectives about gender, race and the election; encouraging registration of potential voters and/or help participants feel empowered about voting; discussing issues and concerns of specific gender and racial groups; and gathering research that could be posted on the Center for Women’s Web site about where candidates stand on major issues

“Gender, Race, and the Presidential Election” is co-sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance. For more information, contact the Center for Women at x0985, or go to http://www.case.edu/provost/centerforwomen.
