Volunteer! Case reaches out to Cleveland neighborhoods through second annual “Case for Community Day”

Image: Roll up your sleeves!Painting, landscaping, hammering nails, picking up trash and perhaps even playing checkers are all on tap for Case Western Reserve University’s second annual Case for Community Day, which will be held Wednesday, September 15, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Case for Community Day is the university’s campus-wide community service day, co-sponsored by the Office of the President and the Provost and the Staff Advisory Council, as an opportunity for Case employees, students and alumni to join together and make a difference in Cleveland.

This year, the university also will be able to influence the nation on Case for Community day. In conjunction with the university’s hosting of the 2004 vice presidential debate on October 5—the Race at Case—voter registration drives will be conducted at several volunteer sites on Case for Community Day, including four homes on Lakeview Avenue; the Notre Dame Apartments; the Park Village Apartments; the Hitchcock Center for Women; the Free Clinic of Greater Cleveland; and the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital.

In addition to the Race at Case connection, the emphasis of Case for Community day remains on the university’s local partnerships. A variety of volunteer opportunities will be available for Case faculty, staff, students and alumni to roll up their sleeves and engage in local service activities that address human and community needs, said Erin Walsh, Case’s director of programs and events.

“This effort provides an opportunity for Case to connect even more closely with surrounding neighborhoods and agencies to work on projects that will benefit the community,” Walsh said. “Community service is a high priority for the university because social responsibility plays a key role in actualizing our vision of creating a truly powerful learning environment.”

Launched last year by Case President Edward M. Hundert, M.D., Case for Community Day is designed for Case “to use our wealth of resources to significantly benefit surrounding neighborhoods while creating a sense of collaboration among our internal constituencies,” said Jacklyn J. Chisholm, Ph.D., associate vice president for community partnerships at Case.

“In creating the world’s most powerful learning environment at Case, we have to maximize our positive economic, social and cultural impact on Cleveland and Northeast Ohio,” Chisholm added.

The day’s mission is three-fold:

  • To provide an opportunity for Case to connect with neighbors
  • To foster a sense of collaboration among staff, faculty, students and alumni as they communicate the university’s effort to be a productive partner with the city
  • To demonstrate the synergy between higher education and service to society

Volunteers will be able to choose from activities such as painting homes; landscaping grounds and cleaning windows at HealthSpace Cleveland; working with senior citizens’ agencies; and doing work for an upcoming local event sponsored by the American Sickle Cell Anemia Association.

Case faculty, staff, students and alumni can identify where they would like to volunteer when logging onto the Case for Community Web site, www.case.edu/events/cfc. For faculty, staff or students unable to leave campus that day, on-campus volunteer opportunities and drives will be available.

Volunteers will report to Thwing Center at 11 a.m. and leave at approximately noon to head to sites around Cleveland to assist in a project until 4:30 p.m. or until the project is completed.
