For immediate release: March 17, 2004
Stephanie Bush, a senior at Case Western Reserve University, has been named a Churchill Scholar by the Winston Churchill Foundation of the United States.
The scholarship will enable her to do graduate work in astronomy at Churchill College, part of Cambridge University.
The Churchill Scholarship program was established in 1959 to encourage and assist American students to prepare for careers in engineering, mathematics and the physical and natural sciences.
Bush is one of 11 students to be chosen for the prestigious scholarship, and the fifth from Case since the program began. Many previous Churchill Scholars have gone on to distinguished careers in commerce, industry and academia.
Last year, Bush was awarded a prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship in recognition for her achievements in science. Her selection in 2003 marked the third year in a row a Case student had been named a Goldwater Scholar.
With the Goldwater Scholarship, she had the opportunity to participate in the National Science Foundation's Research Experience for Undergraduates Program last summer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she studied gas in irregular galaxies.
The Goldwater Scholarship, established by public law in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, fosters outstanding students with interests in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. The scholarship provides stipends up to $7,500 to cover the costs of tuition, fees, books and room and board.
Bush is a native of West Linn, Oregon.
