Tim Shuckerow, and the Case Western Reserve University art education and art studio program that he directs in the College of Arts and Sciences, received honors from the Ohio Art Education Association (OAEA) during its annual meeting.
Shuckerow was honored by the OAEA as the Northeast Region “Outstanding Art Teacher” in 2004. Established in 1980, the outstanding teacher award recognizes individuals who have shown leadership at the local, regional and state levels in arts education as well as have exhibited teaching that is characterized by patience, understanding, compassion and helpfulness.
The Case art education program earned the honor of the 2004 Distinguished Business for Art Education Award in the Northeast Region—an honor that recognizes exemplary service in promoting arts and education. Approximately 300 undergraduate students are enrolled each year in the popular art classes at Case’s Art Studio. The program also develops and trains some 25 art teachers each year.
The desire to teach art to children, and now university students, had its origins in Shuckerow’s experiences as a student teaching assistant in the Cleveland Museum of Art’s programs for children. Over 12 years, he moved from a part-time teaching assistant to supervisor in the museum’s Saturday Art Program for parents and children, which nurtured creativity in children and exposed them and their families to the great art in the museum’s collections.
In 1987, Shuckerow returned to his alma mater at Case as director of the art studio and art education programs. He earned his bachelor of fine art degree in painting from the Cleveland Institute of Art and master’s in art education and a certificate in non profit management from Case.
“I get excited to see students become artists and develop their artistic abilities that can become a lifelong interest for them,” said Shuckerow about the joys of teaching.
The Case art director has been an active member for more than 20 years in the OAEA. In January, he will begin a two-year elected term as the association’s second vice-president. In addition to teaching, Shuckerow is an artist of many talents. He collages, paints and creates Raku ceramics (as well as teaches the popular summer pottery workshop in the Case Continuing Education Program for community members). As a painter as well as a “Signature” member of the National Collage Society, his art work has been exhibited locally and nationally in juried shows.
As a muralist, thousands of Cleveland drivers daily pass by the two murals he directed, which are located on Mayfield Road at the entrance to Little Italy and University Circle.
“Making art can be a hard and arduous task, but it should also be joyful, playful and a liberating experience,” said Shuckerow.
