Along with technical skills, information technology and engineering professionals need to be able to clearly and effectively communicate to put themselves on the road to success. Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management has responded to this need by offering for the first time a course called, “Communication and Management Skills for Technical Professionals” through Executive Education at Weatherhead.
“Communication skills are essential for individuals who want to see their ideas become commercial successes,” said Mark Coticchia, Case vice president for research and technology management. “The ability to bridge the gap between the laboratory and the board room is impacted, for better or for worse, by your skills in communicating your ideas in writing and verbally. I’ve seen deals that have been made or broken based on one side’s ability or inability to communicate effectively.”
Professionals can hone their communication skills during the course’s six, half-day sessions between February and April. During on-campus classes, professionals will participate in interactive workshops that combine leading-edge research with hands-on exercises and role playing that build upon the client relationship from the first meeting to the final presentation.
The course is structured to give individuals an opportunity to practice what is learned between sessions. Classes meet six mornings: February 3 and 10, March 3 and 10 and April 14 and 28.
“The workshop will aim to enhance each participant’s communication, creativity, self-awareness and relationship-building skills,” said Sarah Walleck, Weatherhead instructor for the new course and a communication consultant.
Among the topics covered in the course will be an inventory of personal communications skills, building the partnering client relationship, setting project expectations, managing group interactions, solving problems and negotiating within a project, getting messages across and effective “customer care.”
