Charles E. Rozek, associate professor and associate chair of biology at Case Western Reserve University, has been named dean of the School of Graduate Studies at Case Western Reserve University, effective Monday, November 1, 2004.
The appointment was announced by Lynn T. Singer, deputy provost and vice president for academic programs at Case.
Rozek, who has been a faculty member in the department of biology since 1983, will provide leadership for the School of Graduate Studies and oversee the management, quality and effectiveness of all of Case’s graduate programs. The dean also promotes and supports excellence in graduate teaching, research and creative activities.
“Dr. Rozek’s knowledge and experience as an academic leader, his enthusiasm, and his understanding of graduate student issues make him an ideal person for this position,” said Singer. “His 21-year tenure at Case also will serve our students well because it gives him the opportunity to hit the ground running without a lengthy learning curve. Search Committee members were impressed with Dr. Rozek’s experience, presence and history of working across the university in initiatives such as the Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR).”
The School of Graduate Studies oversees the admissions, record keeping and academic aspects of approximately 3,500 graduate students within 70 degree and joint-degree programs housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Case School of Engineering, the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, the School of Medicine, the Weatherhead School of Management and the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences.
“I welcome the opportunity to bring my experience at Case and the College of Arts and Sciences to the challenge of continuing to make the office of graduate studies responsive to both the needs of the students and the faculty in facilitating the educational process,” Rozek said.
The dean of graduate studies also supports and develops programs aimed at the professional and career development of Case’s graduate students. The dean also heads the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, which serves all postdoctoral scholars and fellows on campus. In addition, the dean also serves as the university’s representative to the Ohio Board of Regents Advisory Committee on Graduate Study.
“I’m excited that we were able to find someone with such a clear strategic vision for the School of Graduate Studies,” said Donald L. Feke, vice provost for planning and assessment at Case. “Dr. Rozek is a proven leader, someone who will greatly influence—for the better—the graduate academic programs and policies that affect the graduate student experience at Case.”
Feke had been serving as dean of graduate studies on an interim basis.
Rozek holds a Ph.D. from Wayne State University and a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University. His current research involves investigations of mechanisms regulating gene expression, especially transcription and processing of messenger RNA, and he is a leading expert in molecular genetics and developmental biology. Since the dean of Graduate Studies is a half-time appointment, Dr. Rozek will be able to continue his teaching and research activities within biology.
