Case Western Reserve University’s Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing is teaming up with Cleveland’s WAKS-FM (KISS-FM 96.5) and Dave & Buster’s Restaurants to recognize area educators and raise awareness of the nation’s nursing shortage.
This month “Educators Who Make a Difference” acknowledges outstanding area educators in any field, while familiarizing students with Case and its School of Nursing.
“If we’re going to beat the nursing shortage, we’ve got to spread the word about nursing,” said May L. Wykle, dean of the School of Nursing. “We are partnering with the community to recognize outstanding local educators and to help create awareness for the nursing profession.”
Each week for 12 weeks, KISS-FM listeners will have an opportunity to nominate a teacher, guidance counselor, principal or other educator from their school on KISS-FM’s web site. A winner will be selected weekly. Winners and nominators will receive invitations to a party in February at Dave & Buster’s in Westlake, Ohio, and a $20 Dave & Buster’s Powercard. The winner and nominator will be announced on the air on Fridays between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Additionally, all nominees will receive a plaque commemorating their contributions to education.
According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), the United States is in the midst of a nursing shortage that is expected to intensify as baby boomers age and the need for health care grows.
In addition, according to the latest projections from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics published in the February 2004 Monthly Labor Review, more than 1 million new and replacement nurses will be needed by 2012. For the first time, the U.S. Department of Labor identified registered nursing as the top occupation in terms of job growth through that same year. Today, fully 75% of all hospital vacancies are for nurses, AACN says.
“Educators Who Make a Difference” is also an effort by the Bolton School to broaden its partnerships with the Northeast Ohio community.
“Nursing students, faculty and staff are committed to community leadership, a goal in keeping with Case’s mission to value social responsibility,” Wykle said. “Partnerships like the ones with KISS-FM and Dave & Buster’s helps to fulfill Case’s values of ethcs, diversity, teamwork and excellence through goodwill and community outreach. One of the Bolton School's strategic objectives is to create opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to partner with institutions external to the university.”
