Phil Paul, PhD

Phil Paul, PhD received a doctoral degree at New York University in the AS Gordon Laboratory for Experimental Hematology. In 1981 be began a post-doctoral fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Laboratory Hematology where he was involved in setting up the bone marrow processing laboratory. He also conducted research on the anemia of renal failure and the benefit of erythropoietin to treat this condition. He was then recruited to the department of surgery to study the molecular genetics of familial colon cancer, and developed clinical testing for APC mutations in these families. After a brief period directing a DNA sequencing core, he joined the Histocompatibility Laboratory to implement sequencing-based HLA genotyping. While working in HLA typing, he became interested in umbilical cord blood banking which lead to collaboration with the Laughlin Lab where he moved in 2006. In addition to cord blood banking, his research interests include signaling pathways involved in retention of pluripotency in hematopoietic progenitor cells.
