Peter Haviernik, PhD

Peter Haviernik is an instructor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Dr. Haviernik joined the Laughlin lab in January of 2007. His previous work with Dr. Linda Wolff (Laboratory of Cellular Oncology, NCI-NIH) was aimed to study mechanism of leukemogenesis in c-myc and MML tumors in mice. Then, while working at Dr. Kevin Bunting’s lab (Division of Hematology/Oncology at CSCRM) he was studying role of TIMP/MMP balance in regulation of hematopoietic stem cell biology using mouse in vivo bone marrow transplant model.
His research is focused on short-term in vitro expansion of UCB HSC (CD133+) because its low content in UCB grafts limits rapid hematopoietic recovery of adult recipients after UCB transplantation. He is interested to elucidate mechanism by which BM derived MSC support multipotent more primitive state of HSC during cytokine-driven expansion.
