Meet the Lab

Laura (Fanning) Hammond

Laura R. Hammond, B.S. - Laura (Fanning) Hammond graduated from Denison University with a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry with a focus in education.  She has been associated with the lab since interning over the summers during her undergraduate studies.  Upon graduation, Laura began studying immune reconstitution within unrelated UCB-HLA mismatched transplants and related HLA matched BM transplants.  These studies led to further investigation into KIRs, NK cells and their killing function as well as the elucidation of NK signaling pathways.  Another area of interest in transplant analysis is that of the outcome of multiple cord blood units infused into a single patient.  Initial studies are indicating a high allo-response among the cord blood cells which may lead to graft rejections.  A third project Laura is involved on is examining the immunogenetic potential of CD133+ cells and the possible role of this immune response for cardiology transplant therapy.  Laura’s thesis work involves elucidating the mechanism by which CD133+ cells can induce an immune response.
