A Message from Andrea Stolar, MD
There has never been a more exciting time to
train in psychiatry, and our capacity to help those individuals
with mental disorders has never been better. Today’s psychiatrists
can deliver effective mental health services based on sound
scientific research, a rapidly expanding pharmacopoeia and a
broad array of evidence-based psychosocial interventions.
The residency program at Case
Western Reserve University/University
Hospitals of Cleveland prepares physicians for productive
careers in psychiatry. Our combined training facilities offer
residents opportunities to work in a variety of mental health
care systems, where they evaluate and manage a diverse patient
population with a wide array of psychiatric disorders. We have
a distinguished research faculty and a clinical faculty of over
two hundred that represents excellence in every aspect of psychiatry.
From psychopharmacologists to psychoanalysts, every member is
committed to excellence in residency education. Several of our
programs, including the Division of Forensic Psychiatry and
Mood Disorders, enjoy international reputations.
The didactic program is a real strength of
our residency, with extensive education in psychopharmacology,
psychodynamic theory and practice, and psychosocial interventions.
The clinical program at University
Hospitals of Cleveland is one of the finest in the country.
We provide a high level of clinical supervision, including ongoing
assessment of the core competencies in psychiatry. Video precepting
is utilized at a number of our training sites. Residents receive
a wealth of experience in general adult psychiatry with core
rotations in the psychiatric subspecialties. There are elective
blocks in the second year, and the fourth year is entirely elective.
This structure provides residents with ample opportunity to
explore areas of interest and enables them to customize their
education to meet their own professional needs. Call is very
reasonable, and the level of staff support is excellent. The
didactic program is comprehensive and challenging, covering
the core knowledge in psychiatry and additional areas relevant
to psychiatric practice.
We believe that residency training should be
exciting, rewarding and fun. Cleveland
is a vibrant city with numerous cultural attractions, fine dining
and professional sporting events. It is also a very affordable
and livable city. The metropolitan area has some of the finest
schools in the country. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the
Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie, Cleveland’s
MetroPark system and the Cuyahoga
Valley National Park offer activities in every season. The
Psychiatry Residents Association,
the resident governing body, is an active organization involved
in planning a series of social and community service activities
throughout the year. We believe that our residents should lead
a balanced life, and we ensure that they have ample time to
do so.
Our mission is to train future leaders in the
field of psychiatry and to prepare them for the challenges of
an increasingly complex health care system. We concern ourselves
with the personal growth of each of our residents as physicians
and as human beings, and we work diligently to assist them in
reaching their full potential as psychiatrists. Our graduates
pursue rewarding careers in clinical care, teaching, research
and administration. They are a credit to our program and to
the field of psychiatry.
If you are looking for a dynamic residency program,
then Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals of
Cleveland is the place to train. I look forward to hearing from
you.
