The Laurelwood
inpatient site is a twenty- bed child and adolescent unit serving
patients between the ages of 3 and 17. There are two programs
operating simultaneously; the child program is designed for
those 13 and under. The adolescent program is for patients aged
14 and older. The clinical programming includes milieu, group,
individual and family participation. Emphasis is placed on family
involvement. Multi-family groups are conducted four times a
week for both child and adolescent programs. Individualized
treatment plans are designed for all patients. Group work is
both dynamic and psychoeducational. Behavioral theory is the
model used for group work and includes cognitive and dialectic
models.
Residents are actively involved in all aspects
of patient care, including initial diagnostic assessments, treatment
planning, daily care and discharge planning. The residents are
under the direct supervision of the Chief of Service of the
Child/Adolescent Unit, Peter Geier, M.D., who is a board certified
child and adolescent psychiatrist. The residents also are supervised
by Thomas Eppright, M.D., a board certified child and adolescent
psychiatrist. Chemical dependency evaluation and treatment are
available. Certified chemical dependency counselors assess needs
and work with case management to determine out patient follow
up.
A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is available
for adolescents aged 13 to 17 and operates six days a week at
the Laurelwood facility. The partial program is entirely separate
from the inpatient unit. The partial program bridges the inpatient
program with out patient services, and is designed with emphasis
on dialectic behavioral therapy. The two child and adolescent
psychiatrists involved in the program have extensive clinical
experience. The nurse manager is a BSN, RN (Bachelors Science
in Nursing) with inpatient behavioral health experience. Case
Managers are Masters Level Social Workers and conduct psychosocial
assessment, family therapy and determine PHP and/or out patient
follow-up needs. Many therapists and nurses involved in the
programs are Masters Level. The nurse manager of the inpatient
program is Dolores Baker, R.N., B.S.N. The clinical manager
of the partial hospital program is Diana Fiocca, R.N., M.S.N.,
C.N.S. Residents are assigned cases by the Chief of Service.
Exposure to the programming is expected as well as ongoing supervised
daily rounds. Residents have individual supervision with a child
