About The Center
The
Cleveland Psychoanalytic Center was
formed in 2002, as a union of the 40-year old Cleveland Psychoanalytic
Institute and the older Cleveland Psychoanalytic Society. As
stated in its bylaws, "The mission of the Cleveland Psychoanalytic
Center is to promote the development and use of psychoanalysis
for the benefit of the community." It is located about a half
mile east of University Hospitals
of Cleveland. Parking is free and usually plentiful.
Like few other places in the country, the Center
and its predecessors have maintained their liaison with many
educational programs within greater Cleveland. A good example
of such an effort is the relationship of the Center with the
Department of
Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University/University
Hospitals of Cleveland. The residency program benefits from
formal seminars, case discussions, continuous case conferences,
and hours of pro-bono individual supervision. The Center also
maintains contact with other graduate programs at Case Western
Reserve University, including the Department of Psychology and
the Mandel School of Social Sciences.
Objectives
The Center's main objective is to offer formal
psychoanalytic training to applicants with varied professional
backgrounds. The Center welcomes diversity, values flexibility,
quality education and clinical skill. Psychoanalytic training
prepares a person to work psychoanalytically either in psychoanalysis
or in psychotherapy.
Allied Course of Study
An allied course of study is the Psychoanalytic
Psychotherapy Program, a two-year didactic course with regular
individual supervision by a graduate analyst. Psychotherapy
training at the Center integrates divergent theories, psychodynamic
as well as those focused on neuroscience and mind-body reciprocity.
We train students to empathize with peoples' suffering, and
look for its meanings so they would feel free to embrace the
complexity of relationships. We maintain openness in defining
issues and confidentiality in all aspects of our training.
Associated Activities
Associated activities of the Center that may
be of interest include a lending library of psychoanalytic materials;
monthly Scientific Meetings with visiting scholars; and study
groups in applications of psychoanalysis to art, literature,
and film. The Center maintains an active mailing list for those
wishing our newsletter (Psychoanalysis in Cleveland, five issues
a year), which includes announcements of events.
