| This new and innovative 3 year pilot program was announced in 2007 by the Residency Review Committee of the ACGME. It provides training in general and child/adolescent psychiatry for Board Eligible and Board Certified pediatricians who decide to retrain in psychiatry. The Portal Project provides a 36 month training experience that meets requirements for Board Certification in both general psychiatry and child/adolescent psychiatry. The sponsoring institution, University Hospitals Case Medical Center (CMC), is the primary affiliate of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and has 844 licensed beds and 544 staffed beds. This Portal Project training site is the first of the three approved sites to begin training pediatricians. At this time there are 4 Portal residents, 2 per training year. Recruitment of the third class is underway.
Under the auspices of this project, the training program for general psychiatry and the fellowship program for child and adolescent psychiatry work together to provide a training experience for graduates of residencies in pediatrics, designed to meet the requirements as set forth by the RRC for eligibility for both general and child/adolescent psychiatry board certification.
For the first year of training the Portal resident fulfill their requirements for inpatient general and child/adolescent psychiatry, as well as their required training in consultation/liaison for adults and for children and adolescents. The final month of the first year is completed on the Addiction service. All training is done with the residents and fellows who are participating in the traditional training tracks. The second and third years of training are focused on outpatient care, both adult and child/adolescent.
Didactics during the first 18 months are with the general psychiatry residents. During the second 18 months the Portal resident participates in the didactics for the child and adolescent fellows.
Supervision is provided according to the standards of both the general psychiatry and child/adolescent fellowship. The on call responsibilities are divided equally between the general and child/adolescent program, with 18 months on one, then 18 months on the other.
