Geropsychiatry Clinical Research Studies
Acute Pharmacotherapy of Late Life Mania (Geri-BD)
Purpose: The primary aim of this study is to compare the efficacy and tolerability of acute treatment with lithium (LI) and divalproex (DV) in patients with bipolar mania who are aged 60 years and older. Participants are recruited from both inpatient and outpatient clinics at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, as well as from the community.
Open-label, prospective trial of lamotrigine for Symptoms of geriAtric bipolar Depression (GERI BD SAD)
Purpose: To determine the most effective/best tolerated dose of lamotrigine in patients with bipolar depression who are aged 60 and older. Participants are recruited from outpatient clinics at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, as well as from the community.
Personal adherence evaluation of individuals receiving treatment for Bipolar Disorder (PAE in BPD)
Purpose: This study uses a semi-structured qualitative interview-based assessment to explore reasons that patients with Bipolar Disorder (BPD) who are known to be poorly adherent with medication treatments do not take their medications. Participants are recruited from a Community Mental Health Clinic (Connections: Health • Wellness • Advocacy).
Customized Adherence Enhancement in Bipolar Disorder (CAE in BPD)
Purpose: This study involves educational and behavioral interventions intended to enhance treatment adherence in individuals with bipolar disorder (BPD) being treated with mood stabilizing medication and are known to be poorly adherent with medication treatments. The aim of this project is to test the use of a modular-based intervention in a pilot feasibility, acceptability and preliminary efficacy study of customized adherence enhancement (CAE) in a vulnerable population with BPD at a Community Mental Health Clinic. Participants are recruited from a Community Mental Health Clinic (Connections: Health • Wellness • Advocacy).
Customized Adherence Enhancement for Individuals with Bipolar disorder receiving atypical antipsychotic therapy
Purpose: This study is a pilot, prospective project of the effects of customized adherence enhancement (CAE) when added to the medical management (usual care) of patients with bipolar disorder who are known to be at risk for treatment non-adherence. The aim of this project is to test the use of a modular-based intervention in a pilot feasibility, acceptability and preliminary efficacy study of customized adherence enhancement (CAE) in a vulnerable population with BPD at an academic medical center. Participants are recruited from the Psychiatry outpatient clinics at University Hospitals Case Medical Center
