Factors for Combat-Related Posttraumatic Psychopathology
and Post-Combat Adjustment
To facilitate and augment the Department
of Defense's (DoD) commitment to the mental health of
its service members, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur initiated
legislation that directs the DOD to work in collaboration
with the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) to establish
a collaborative research and education effort to provide
research and education in mental health care to military
personnel and veterans.
The Kaptur DoD/DVA Mental Health Initiative
will involve an inter-linkage between DoD and DVA, and
has been tasked to develop a series of research protocols,
led by University Hospitals of Cleveland/Case Western
Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, but partnering
with regional and national institutions (including but
not limited to the Louis Stokes VAMC, the Medical University
of Ohio, the adjacent Veterans Clinics, the National Institute
of Mental Health, Sandusky Veterans Nursing Homes and
other regionally and nationally recognized Centers) to
initially focus on the further study of the science of
illnesses including profiling incidence, onset and nature
of such conditions as PTSD, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia,
and Panic Disorder.
