About the Program

The Phobia and Anxiety Disorders Clinic is a psychiatric specialty program for the assessment and treatment of anxiety disorders which include panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, specific and social phobia, and stress related disorders, as well as phenomenologically complex disorders such as agoraphobia, and obsessive compulsive disorder. The primary therapeutic modalities include behavioral/cognitive therapy, brief and focal psychotherapy, as well as pharmacotherapy with the aim of effecting rapid improvement in the clinical condition within the relatively short period of three to six months.

The Phobia and Anxiety Disorders Clinic houses clinical research projects, and also fulfills an important teaching and training function for advanced psychiatric residents who participate in evaluations and follow-up sessions under direct supervision by the clinic director during their rotation through the anxiety program.

Dr. Mavisskalian is the director of the Phobia and Anxiety Disorders Clinic, and is personally involved in the evaluation and treatment of all individuals seen within the clinical and research arms of the program.

What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural emotion, and much like fear and love, it has adaptive functions. When it becomes exaggerated, irrational, excessive, and interferes with one's functioning, it becomes maladaptive and that's when we speak of anxiety disorders.

What Causes Anxiety Disorders?

The causes are not exactly known for sure but both genetic (hereditary) and acquired (environmental) risk factors for developing an anxiety disorder has been identified.
