PBRN Shared Resource Leaders
Kurt C. Stange, MD, PhD is a family physician and epidemiologist. As Professor of Family Medicine, Epidemiology & Biostatistics, Oncology and Sociology at Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Stange has over two decades of experience in practice-based clinical research. He has developed multiple networks including one comprised of more than 100 primary care practices that have conducted an ongoing series of observational and clinical trial research designed to understand and improve practice. Dr. Stange is an American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professor and serves as editor for the peer-reviewed journal, the Annals of Family Medicine. His PBRN cancer control research has been funded by the National Cancer Institute since 1994.
Dr. Stange provides scientific guidance and mentorship to practicing clinicians conducting practice-based research.
James J. Werner, PhD has been conducting practice-based research since 1994. He is Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at Case Western Reserve University and is Co-director of the Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN) Shared Resource of the Cleveland Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative (CTSC) as well as Director of the PBRN Core Facility at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Through the PBRN Shared Resource and Core Facility, Dr. Werner collaborates with clinical investigators and full-time clinicians to conduct clinical and translational research. He also trains investigators in practice-based research methods, including directing a project to integrate evidence-based practices into clinical instruction for Case Western Reserve residents and medical students. He is the leader of the PBRN Seminar Series of the Cleveland CTSC and teaches MPHP 474, a graduate-level course in practice-based research methods.
