Biography
Dr. Magdalena Tary-Lehmann received her B.A. from Gymnasium Kastl, Germany, in 1977. She went on to earn
her M.D. from the University of Tübingen/University of Freiburg, Germany, where she also completed a Ph.D.
in Immunology. She also spent some time at Sandoz Ltd. in Switzerland doing preclinical research. From
1989 until 1993, Dr. Tary-Lehmann was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California in the Division
of Clinical Immunology and Allergy. Later, she came to Case as an Instructor, and since 2004 has been
an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology.
Research
One focus of my laboratory is the single cell characterization of T cell immunity in humans. We have
developed direct ex vivo ELISPOT approaches for measurements of the frequencies of antigen-specific T
cells via the detection of their cytokine signature (Helms et al, JI. 2000, 164:3723) and Granzyme
B production (Rininsland, J. Immunol. Methods, 2000, 240: 143). We have been using these high-
resolution approaches to gain new insights into T cell immunity in:
- Healthy individuals. Helms et al, JI. 2000, 164:3723, Hesse et al, J. Immunol, 2001,167:1353.
- Transplant patients. Tary-Lehmann et al, Transplantation, 1998, 66:219, Heeger et al, J. Immunol, 1999, 163:2267, and Gebauer et al, Am. J. Transplantation, 2002, in press.
- Lyme arthritis. Gross et al, 1998, Science, 281:703.
- Tuberculosis. Schwander et al, J. Inf. Dis., 1998, 178:1443, Schwander et al, J.Immunol. 2000, 165:1479, and Aung H et al, J. Immunol. Methods, 2002, 259:25.
- Multiple sclerosis. Pelfrey et al, J. Immunol. 2000, 165:1641.
- HIV. Helms et al, J. Immunol. 2000, 164:3723, Rininsland, J. Immunol. Methods, 2000, 240: 143.
- Alzheimer’s Disease. Loewenbruck et al, Beta amyloid specific T cells are of Th1 phenotype in young healthy individuals, but of Th3 phenotype in Alzheimer patients.
My present efforts in the field of human T cell monitoring focuses on HIV. In particular, we are studying CD8 effector cell diversity. Performing simultaneous cytokine and Granzyme B measurements, we are following up on the observation that Granzyme B producing CD8 cells frequently do not co express cytokine and vice versa (Kleen et al, 2004, AIDS).
The second focus of my laboratory evolves around mechanisms of tumor rejection/tolerance in murine models. In particular we are addressing the question how the activation of the innate immune system relates to the definition of the T cell effector class and to the induction of protective anti-tumor immunity. (Stern et al, J. Immunol., 2002, 168:6090 , Lonsdorf et al, J. Imminol., 2003, 171: 3941).
