Biography
Dr. Catherine Listinsky graduated with a B.S.E.E. (electrical engineering, biomedical) in 1972, and an M.S. (physiology) in 1974, both from The Ohio State University. She received an M.D. degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 1978, and subsequently trained in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Chicago, finishing residency in 1982. At the U of C, she was strongly influenced by the teachings of Drs. Diana Variakojis and James Vardiman in hematopathology, and by the teachings of Dr. Robert Riddell in gastrointestinal pathology. Dr. Listinsky trained in hematopathology at the University of Louisville for one year, where she was responsible for interpretation of all diagnostic bone marrow and lymph node specimens, and teaching lymphoma classifications to the residents. Dr. Listinsky achieved Board Certification in AP/CP in 1983, and subspecialty qualification in Hematology (Pathology), in 1986.

From 1983 to 1988, Dr. Listinsky served on the faculty of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry as Assistant Professor of Pathology. In addition to performing general surgical pathology diagnostic work and teaching, Dr. Listinsky served as subspecialty consultant on all bone marrow core biopsies and diagnostic lymph node biopsies, and organized the sophomore medical student course on the Lymphoreticular System. She also co-coordinated the bi-weekly Clinical Gastrointestinal Pathology Case Conference (with Dr. Eric Shenk), and served as subspecialty consultant in gastrointestinal pathology, especially in the area of inflammatory bowel disease and dysplasia. During this time at Rochester, she developed an interest in applied flow cytometry research, and performed ploidy analysis on human ovarian tumor material extracted from archival paraffin blocks (at that time, a new technique).

In 1988, due to a family move to Birmingham, AL, Dr. Listinsky served for a year in a community hospital, where she was involved in preparations to develop a flow cytometry laboratory, in addition to practicing a broad range of both anatomic and clinical pathology. In 1989 Dr. Listinsky accepted an appointment as Associate Professor of Pathology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. There she served as surgical pathologist, hematopathologist, and flow cytometrist until 2003. Dr. Listinsky organized and taught at the medical student and residency level in both gastrointestinal pathology and in hematopathology, and became a founding co-director of the UAB Fellowship in Hematopathology, a program approved for two trainees and fully accredited by the RRC for Pathology beginning in 1995.

In 2003, Dr. Listinsky joined the faculty of the Department of Pathology at University Hospitals Case Medical Center. Dr. Listinsky continues serving on the general surgical pathology service, teaching, and subspecialty consultation on disorders of the hematopoietic system.
