Biography
Dr. Katharine Appleton Downes graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College where she majored in History and Science with special concentration in Biology and the History of Medicine. She received her MD degree with distinction from Case Western Reserve where she was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. She won the Sir William Osler Medal for first place nationally in History of Medicine.

Dr. Downes trained in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation and at University Hospitals of Cleveland where she served as Chief Resident in Clinical Pathology. She completed a fellowship in Transfusion Medicine and Blood Banking in the Cleveland City Wide Fellowship program jointly sponsored by Cleveland Clinic Foundation, University Hospitals, and the Northern Ohio American Red Cross.

Dr. Downes currently serves as Chair of the Transfusion Medicine Resource Committee of the College of American Pathologists. This committee serves as a resource with oversight of laboratory accreditation in transfusion medicine, laboratory proficiency testing, educational activities, and regulatory issues for over 4000 laboratories in the United States.

Dr. Downes also chairs the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute Subcommittee on Validation for Automated Devices for Immunohematologic Testing which is working to develop guidelines for the use of automated systems in laboratories globally.

Dr. Downes provides medical leadership and guidance for the participation and involvement of University Hospitals Case Medical Center in the US Biovigilance Project.

Dr. Downes has authored multiple peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. She has given scientific presentations at international and national meetings sponsored by the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the American Association of Blood Banks, the American Society for Apheresis, the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, College of American Pathologists, and the International Society for Thrombosis and Hemostasis.

Dr. Downes has served as Medical Director of Coagulation Laboratories and Associate Director of the Blood Bank/Transfusion Service at University Hospitals Case Medical Center since 2002.

Research
Dr. Downes's research interests include national trends in pretransfusion compatibility testing, regulation and laboratory accreditation and its relationship to patient safety, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, the management of thombotic microangiopathies with therapeutic apheresis, the appropriateness and epidemiology of blood utilization, and specialty coagulation testing.
