Research Summary
Dr. Lass is the Charles I Thomas Professor and Chairman of the Case Western Reserve University Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Director of the University Hospitals Eye Institute, Medical Director of the Case Cornea Image Analysis Reading Center (CIARC), and Medical Director of the Cleveland Eye Bank. Dr. Lass is a cornea fellowship trained ophthalmologist with over 30 years of experience in clinical research. He has served in leadership positions in national and international organizations dedicated to the advancement of the management of corneal diseases, most notably the Cornea Society. He is PI of the Specular Microscopy Ancillary Study (SMAS) of the Cornea Donor Study (CDS) (U10 EY12728), directing operations of the CIARC and serving on the Steering Committee of the CDS, since 2000. He also leads the Case Vision Research Coordinating Center developed under an NEI supported R21 (EY15145) which has been instrumental in developing the coordinating center capabilities at CWRU and UH over the past 5 years. These capabilities have led to two major clinical study coordinating efforts, including the Fuchs’ Genetics Multi-center Study (EY16482) and Endothelial keratoplasty vs. Penetrating Keratoplasty trial with two publications to date listed.

As Medical Director of the Case CIARC, he has over 20 years of experience in directing image analysis studies of the corneal endothelium with numerous publications, notably as part of the CDS. The work of CIARC has now been extended for developing methods for dual grading and adjudication of endothelial images for morphometric analysis for the SMAS funded by an ARRA supplement to U10EY12788.
