DIDACTIC PROGRAM in DIETETIC   (DPD)



I. Dietetics . . . in a nutshell           

 • • Dietetics is a science that deals with people, food and health. Dietitians work in a variety of settings and function as members of a health care team. As health professionals, dietitians must possess and maintain the credentials of a Registered Dietitian (RD) and/or Licensed Dietitian (LD).


The DPD is located in the Department of Nutrition at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. The Department of Nutrition is one of the 13 basic science departments within the School of Medicine. The department faculty consists of 17 full-time faculty with primary appointments and several professors with secondary or adjunct appointments. Of these, 7 full-time faculty with primary appointments and one adjunct faculty are involved with the DPD.

II. The Program           

 • • Students interested in a career as a dietetics professional are required to complete the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD).


The DPD may be completed within any of the undergraduate Nutrition degree programs or the M.S. in Nutrition. Foundation Knowledge and Learning Outcomes are met through didactic coursework providing educational experiences in the basic sciences of biology, chemistry, biochemistry, physiology and microbiology; food and nutrition course, which include basic nutrition, food science, clinical nutrition, and advanced nutrition; the social sciences, such as sociology and educational psychology; and food service systems management.

Completion of the DPD is a prerequisite to entering a dietetic internship.

IV. Becoming a Registered Dietitian           

 • • To become a REGISTERED DIETITIAN (R.D.), the student must fulfill the following:
  1. Have a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree granted by a U.S. regionally accredited college or university.

  2. Hold complete current minimum academic requirements for the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association.

  3. Complete an accredited supervised practice program such as a dietetic internship.

  4. Pass the National Registration Examination.
