Oblander to present at the Gordon Research Conference on Cell Contact and Adhesion

Samantha Oblander, a third year graduate student studying under Dr. Susann Brady-Kalnay, will be traveling to the 2007 Gordon Research Conference on Cell Contact and Adhesion in Lucca (Barga) Italy this May for a poster presentation. Samantha will be presenting her findings, which were recently published in Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience [PUBMED link]. This paper demonstrates a novel function for the cell adhesion molecule E-cadherin. She has shown that E-cadherin promotes neurite outgrowth from chick retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and has examined the role of protein tyrosine phosphatase-mu (PTPµ) in regulating E-cadherin-mediated neurite outgrowth. These findings contribute to the understanding of signaling pathways involved in cell adhesion and migration, which may lead to discoveries regarding neuronal regeneration.
The Gordon Research Conferences provide an international forum for the presentation and discussion of frontier research in the biological, chemical and physical sciences, and their related technologies. Samantha’s trip to Italy was made possible, in part, through financial support from the School of Graduate Studies at Case Western Reserve University, the Ted Karn Travel Award and the National Institute of Health Visual Science Training Grant (T32-EY07157)
