Program Director
Robert A. Salata, M.D.

- Professor of Medicine
Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine
- Executive Vice Chair
Department of Medicine
- Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases & HIV Medicine
University Hospitals Case Medical Center
Research Interest: Dr. Salata's research interests include international studies in HIV infection and HIV infection in women, sexually transmitted diseases, nosocomial infections, vaccine and non-vaccine strategies to impact on HIV seroincidence, infections in immunocompromised hosts, and the epidemiology of infectious diseases. He is also the Director of the CWRU ID Alliance focusing on infectious diseases in underserved communities surrounding the University. He also is the PI for the Infectious Diseases Clinical Trials Unit for phase 1 trials of new therapeutic agents for emerging infection. These are collaborative studies with other faculty members involved in HIV research and requires close interactions with members of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
Associate Program Director
David A. Bobak, M.D.

- Associate Professor of Medicine
Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine
- Medical Director, Travelers' HealthCare Center
Division of Infectious Diseases & HIV Medicine
University Hospitals Case Medical Center
Research Interest: Dr. Bobak's clinical interest includes infections in solid organ and hematologic transplant recipients, traveler's health and Hepatitis C. His research interests focus on clinical and translational research directed at understanding interactions between microbes and the host immune response. His clinical research interests include Clostridium difficile infection, hepatitis C, and emerging infections in transplant recipients. He is also developing collaborative translational research projects, relevant examples include: 1) utility of noninvasive markers of disease progression and response to therapy in patients with hepatitis C and 2) examining new molecular assays for early diagnosis of invasive fungal infections in transplant recipients.
Co-Director
Usha Stiefel, M.D.

- Assistant Professor of Medicine
Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine
- Section Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases
Louis Stokes VA Hospital
Research Interest: Dr. Stiefel's research is focused on mechanisms by which the (predominantly anaerobic) indigenous intestinal microbiota prevents colonization by exogenous, antibiotic-resistant, potentially pathogenic microorganisms. Also, has a secondary interest in the pathogenesis of infection and/or colonization with Staphylococcus aureus, particularly community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA).
Co-Director
Robert C. Kalayjian, M.D.

- Associate Professor of Medicine
Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine
- Director of Infectious Diseases
MetroHealth Medical Center
Research Interest: Dr. Kalayjian's research interest focuses on the AIDS Clinical Trials Unit and interactions of aging with HIV disease.
